Onward or return ticket

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states whether an onward or return ticket is required to enter Libya. Libya's eVisa portal lists a valid return travel ticket among the requirements for the Temporary Assignment Visa, and a confirmed travel ticket to the final destination for the Transit Visa; the Tourist Visa requirements do not include one.

Proof of funds

Required

Libya's eVisa portal lists among the tourist visa requirements that the tourist must possess an amount of not less than USD 1,000 or its equivalent in a convertible currency. No official source we could read states an amount for visa-exempt arrivals.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the traveller.

The UK government says all short-stay visitors must register with the police within a week of arrival, and that not registering could bring a fine on departure. The Australian government says travellers must register their passport with a police station on arrival, at the station closest to where they stay if it is safe to do so, and that failing to do so may result in fines and problems during the stay or on departure.

If not done: The UK government says you could get a fine when you leave the country if you do not register.

Customs & currency

The UK Foreign Office says that if you enter or leave Libya with over USD 10,000-worth of cash, you must declare it to the customs authorities, or you risk having the money confiscated and even being detained, and that it is illegal to take dinar out of Libya.

  • The Government of Canada says Libyan authorities strictly prohibit the import and/or export of certain goods, including alcohol, religious material and antiquities, weapons, illegal drugs, pork and pork products, and pornographic content. The UK Foreign Office says it is illegal in Libya to drink alcohol.
  • The UK Foreign Office says you must get permission before taking any photographs at or near military facilities; the Government of Canada says photography of military installations, personnel and government buildings is prohibited, and to seek permission before taking photos of official buildings or individuals.

Country in a nutshell

Currency

Cards & payments
The UK Foreign Office says Libya is a cash-based society and you cannot use bank cards at banks, ATMs or hotels; that there is a severe shortage of cash and the Libyan Central Bank has imposed restrictions on cash withdrawals; that exchange is tightly controlled by the Central Bank, no bank will change money, exchange offices approved by the Central Bank operate at black market rates, and informal methods of exchange carry the risk of arrest; and that it is illegal to take dinar out of Libya.
Safety — High risk
The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Libya except the cities of Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Derna and the surrounding Jebel Akhdar area, and against all but essential travel to those cities. It says the security situation remains dangerous and unpredictable, citing localised violence between competing armed groups, kidnap, detention, and a high risk of striking unexploded bombs or mines off-road, and says in-person support is not available in Libya.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Jul 30, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

The Government of Canada says that in the north, near the Mediterranean coast, summers are hot and dry and winters are rainy, while in the south the climate is semi-arid and it can get very hot in the Sahara; between June and September temperatures can exceed 40°C and sand and dust storms are frequent. Tips & warnings

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Libya except the cities of Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Derna and the surrounding Jebel Akhdar area, and against all but essential travel to those cities. It says it is a realistic possibility that terrorist groups will target foreign nationals for kidnap, and that in-person UK government support is not available in Libya: the British Embassy in Tunis provides assistance.

Libya's eVisa portal says that for a tourist visa the sponsor (the tourism company) must be registered with the Passports, Nationality and Foreigners Affairs Authority and hold a delegate card, and that a copy of the tourism company's letter identifying the tourist group and the destination of the visit must be uploaded to the system.

The UK Foreign Office says there is a UN-facilitated ceasefire in place between eastern and western armed forces, but there is still a high risk of localised violence between competing armed groups throughout the country, and that the Interim Government of National Unity has limited control of security provision across the country.

The UK Foreign Office says bank cards cannot be used at banks, ATMs or hotels, no bank will change money, and it is illegal to take dinar out of Libya.
