Israel visa and entry requirements

Israel's Foreign Ministry lists, country by country, whether a national passport needs a tourist visa or is exempted. Visitors from visa-exempt countries apply for an ETA-IL electronic travel authorization and can stay up to 90 days per visit; the Population and Immigration Authority says that if you are not eligible for an ETA-IL, you need to apply for a visa. Applications for B/2 tourist visas can be submitted at Israeli missions in the country of origin. Under the Authority's eVisa-B2 pilot, Indian and Sri Lankan passport holders residing in India and Sri Lanka can apply for a B2 visa online.

International Driving Permit

Israel is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). An Israeli Government Press Office guide says a foreign driver's licence (including an international licence) is only valid in Israel for one year from the date of first entry. Canada's travel advice says you should carry an International Driving Permit; the UK government says UK drivers need both the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and their UK driving licence.

Best time to visit

No official source we could read gives seasonal guidance. The UK government says roads can flood during extreme weather and that flash flooding is a risk, particularly in the arid southern region of the Negev.

Tips & warnings

The UK government says visitors entering via Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport get an entry card instead of an entry stamp in their passport; at other entry points you may get an entry card or a stamp. It says to keep the entry card with your passport until you leave: it is evidence that you entered Israel legally, and you may need it, particularly if you are crossing into Palestine.

The UK government lists three Jordan–Israel border crossings — Allenby/King Hussein Bridge, the Northern (Jordan River/Sheikh Hussein) crossing and the Southern (Yitzhak Rabin/Wadi Araba) crossing — and says land crossings to Jordan may be restricted or close at short notice, with more information on the Israel Airport Authority website.

The UK government says you may experience lengthy personal questioning and baggage searches at security when you enter and leave Israel.

The UK government says Shabbat is from sunset on Friday to nightfall on Saturday, and advises you to avoid driving into ultra-Orthodox Jewish areas of Jerusalem on Shabbat, where local residents may throw stones at your car.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Israel?

It depends on your passport. Israel's Foreign Ministry lists, for example, Australian, Austrian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Swedish and Swiss national passports as exempted, and Afghan, Algerian, Iranian, Iraqi, Sudanese and Syrian national passports as requiring a tourist visa. Visitors from visa-exempt countries apply for an ETA-IL and can stay up to 90 days per visit; the Population and Immigration Authority says Moldovan citizens holding a biometric passport are eligible to apply for an ETA-IL, and that if you are not eligible for an ETA-IL you need to apply for a visa. Applications for B/2 tourist visas can be submitted at Israeli missions in the country of origin, and under the Authority's eVisa-B2 pilot Indian and Sri Lankan passport holders residing in India and Sri Lanka can apply online. The UK government tells British citizens they can visit Israel without a visa as tourists.

What is ETA-IL and how do I get one?

ETA-IL is Israel's Electronic Travel Authorization: visitors from visa-exempt countries apply for it through the Population and Immigration Authority's ETA-IL system, and the application fee is 25 NIS (you cannot get a refund after you apply). It stays valid for up to 2 years, or until your current passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows a stay of up to 90 days per visit. The UK government says that since 1 January 2025 British visitors need an ETA before they arrive.

Does Israel stamp your passport?

Not at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport: the UK government says visitors entering there get an entry card instead of an entry stamp in their passport, while at other entry points you may get an entry card or a stamp. The UK's advice for Iran says stamps from other countries' border crossing points with Israel may also lead to refusal of entry there.

Will visiting Israel prevent me from entering other countries?

The UK government's travel advice says that an Israeli stamp, or a passport showing previous travel to Israel, may get you refused entry to Iran (including stamps from other countries' border crossing points with Israel), Lebanon (even with a valid Lebanese visa), Syria and Kuwait, and that a passport showing previous travel to Israel will not be accepted for travel to Libya. It also says visitors entering through Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport get an entry card instead of an entry stamp in their passport.

Is it safe to visit Israel right now?

The UK government advises against all travel to Gaza, within 500m of the border with Gaza, and to parts of the West Bank, northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights; it says there is a risk of rocket and drone attacks throughout Israel and tells travellers to follow the instructions of Israeli Home Front Command. Australia's Smartraveller says to reconsider your need to travel to Israel overall and not to travel to border areas with Gaza (Palestine), Lebanon and Syria.
