Staying past your permitted stay

The UK government says border officials check the length of stay on departure, and anyone who overstays the 90-day period without a valid reason must pay a fine, either on departure at the airport or in advance at some police stations. The French government says that after an irregular stay, leaving the country must be authorised by the Directorate of Borders and Foreigners, and that this is, as a rule, subject to a fine proportional to the length of the overstay.

Customs & currency

Tunisian Customs says any import or export of foreign currency worth 20,000 Tunisian dinars or more must be declared to Customs on entry, on exit and in transit. A non-resident can re-export more than 5,000 dinars' worth of the foreign banknotes they brought in only if they declared them on entry, and not more than 30,000 dinars' worth (above that, through authorised banks and financial institutions); the import declaration is valid for 3 months from entry and for one trip only. Keep the exchange slip when you change currency into dinars: you will need it to change leftover dinars back at a bank.

  • The UK FCDO says Tunisia has strict currency controls: check whether you need to declare foreign currency on arrival (failure to declare may result in confiscation), and keep declaration documents and official exchange receipts.
  • The UK FCDO says it is illegal to bring drones into Tunisia without authorisation; any drone detected will be confiscated and stored until your departure.

Tunisia is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The UK government says British drivers can drive in Tunisia for up to one year with a 1968 international driving permit (IDP) and their UK driving licence, and also need to carry a green card to prove they have the minimum insurance cover. Canada's travel advice says Canadians can drive in Tunisia with a valid Canadian driver's licence and should have an International Driving Permit. The UK government says the legal drink-driving limit in Tunisia is stricter than for England and Wales. No official source we could read states Tunisia's own rule for drivers holding a foreign licence.
