Uruguay visa and entry requirements

Uruguay's Dirección Nacional de Migración publishes, country by country, who needs a visa, and says citizens of countries not on its list need a consular visa. It lists the United States, Canada and Great Britain as not needing a visa and says European Union passports need none. Uruguay's migration regulation (Decree 394/009) sets the stay of the non-residents it covers at ninety days, renewable for ninety more, and the Dirección Nacional de Migración grants extensions (prórroga). People who need a visa contact the Uruguayan consular office for their place of residence.

Staying past your permitted stay

When the authorised stay expires, foreigners must leave the country, unless the Dirección Nacional de Migración extends it for justified reasons or a change of migration category was requested before it expired. Remaining in the country after the authorised stay expires is a ground for expulsion. People whose stay has already expired may apply for a temporary stay extension (expired), at 345.00 UI instead of 225.60 UI for a stay still in force.

Customs & currency

Uruguay's customs service (Dirección Nacional de Aduanas) says anyone not under Central Bank control must declare to it the transport across the border of cash, precious metals or other monetary instruments worth USD 10,000 or more.

  • The UK government's travel advice says you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty, and that it is illegal for visitors to import fruits, vegetables, animals or dairy products and their derivatives, flammable materials, alkaloids, narcotics, obscene objects, and subversive or pornographic material.

In March 2019 Uruguay's public health minister said “tenemos un agua segura” (we have safe water) and that water-borne diseases such as hepatitis and leptospirosis have a very low prevalence in Uruguay thanks to high water potability.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Uruguay?

It depends on your nationality: the Dirección Nacional de Migración publishes the list, and citizens of countries not on it need a consular visa. The list shows no visa needed for, among others, Great Britain, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, and says European Union passports need none. People who need a visa contact the Uruguayan consular office for their place of residence.

How long can I stay in Uruguay without a visa?

Uruguay's migration regulation (Decree 394/009) sets the stay of the non-residents it covers at ninety days, renewable for ninety more. An extension (prórroga) of a stay that is still valid must be requested from the Dirección Nacional de Migración at least 15 calendar days before the permitted stay expires.

Can I enter Uruguay with a national ID card instead of a passport?

No official source we could read lists which national identity cards Uruguay accepts instead of a passport. To apply to extend a stay, the Dirección Nacional de Migración asks for a valid travel document: a national identity document or a passport.

Do US citizens need a visa for Uruguay?

No. The Dirección Nacional de Migración's list shows that United States passport holders do not need a visa. Uruguay's migration regulation (Decree 394/009) sets the stay of the non-residents it covers at ninety days, renewable for ninety more.

Can I extend my stay in Uruguay?

Yes. The Dirección Nacional de Migración extends the stay (prórroga) of foreigners in a regular migration situation. You apply in person at a Migration office with a valid national identity document or passport; while your stay is still valid, the request must be made at least 15 calendar days before it expires. The fee is 225.60 UI while the stay is valid and 345.00 UI once it has expired.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Uruguay?

The US CDC says Uruguay's country entry requirements do not require the yellow fever vaccine.
