Tips & warnings

The EU suspended in whole its visa-waiver agreement with Vanuatu (Council Decision (EU) 2022/2198), citing Vanuatu's investor citizenship schemes, and EU Regulation 2018/1806 lists Vanuatu among the nationalities that need a visa. Vanuatu's Department of Immigration still lists EU states such as France, Germany and Italy among its exempted countries.

The UK FCDO says the tropical cyclone season normally runs from November to May, but cyclones can happen throughout the year, with a greater risk of strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, landslides and road closures during the season.

The UK FCDO lists active volcanoes on Ambae, Ambrym, Epi, Gaua, Lopevi, Tanna and Vanua Lava, and says alert levels can change unexpectedly and you may not be able to access an island if a volcano is active. It advises contacting the Vanuatu Tourism Office for the latest advice before travelling to an area with volcanoes, and checking Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department updates on seismic activity.

The UK FCDO says local customs are strictly observed and should be respected, that beachwear should not be worn away from beaches and hotels, and that some kava bars (nakamals), particularly outside Port Vila, do not welcome women. It also says to always get permission before photographing people.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Vanuatu?

It depends on your passport. Vanuatu's Department of Immigration lists the exempted countries — among them the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, China, India, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa — whose travellers can obtain a tourist visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 120 days. Travellers from non-exempted countries must apply in advance, either for a visitor visa of up to 30 days (7,420 VUV) or for a tourist visa of up to 120 days without extension (5,150 VUV).

How long can I stay in Vanuatu without a visa?

Up to 120 days for travellers from exempted countries, who can obtain a tourist visa on arrival provided they meet the grant criteria. The Department of Immigration says the tourist visa does not allow extensions and the holder must depart before the 120-day period expires.

Has the EU suspended visa-free travel with Vanuatu?

Yes. The EU suspended in whole its short-stay visa-waiver agreement with Vanuatu (Council Decision (EU) 2022/2198), citing Vanuatu's investor citizenship schemes, and EU Regulation 2018/1806 lists Vanuatu in Annex I, whose nationals need a visa to cross the EU's external borders. Vanuatu's Department of Immigration still lists EU states such as France, Germany and Italy among its exempted countries.

How do I apply for a Vanuatu visitor visa?

The Department of Immigration says visitor visa applicants must be outside Vanuatu when they apply, and must provide a certified copy of the passport bio-data page and all used pages, evidence of a return ticket or other arranged transport from Vanuatu within 30 days of arrival, and funds or income of at least 40,000 vatu a month or evidence of support from family or friends in Vanuatu. Its page links an online application. No official source we could read states a processing time.

What will I be asked for on arrival?

The Department of Immigration says non-citizens arriving must produce a passport valid for more than 6 months at the time of arrival, a return airline ticket and a confirmed accommodation or local address, plus a valid visa for persons from non-exempt countries. Visitor-visa applicants must also show funds of at least 40,000 vatu a month, or support from family or friends in Vanuatu; the tourist visa criteria include having the financial means to support yourself and any dependants, and no official source we could read states an amount for it.
