Yemen visa and entry requirements

The Embassy of Yemen in Washington sets out visa requirements for US passport holders and lists other nationalities that need a visa — among them the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Japan and Australia — asks for an invitation letter from Yemen's Department of Immigration with applications, and says it is not issuing tourist visas at this time. Canada's travel advice says Yemeni authorities do not issue visas at ports of entry. Yemen's Law No. 47 of 1991 on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners says no foreigner may enter without a valid passport endorsed with permission to enter, that entry visas are issued by the head of the immigration authority or a body the government authorizes, and that the Minister of the Interior may exempt some nationals from the entry visa on a reciprocal basis, with the Council of Ministers' approval; no official page we could read names exempted nationalities. No official page we could read states where a tourist visa can currently be obtained.

Fine: 30 YER per day

Every foreigner must hold a residence permit and must leave Yemen when the stay ends, unless the head of the authority has extended it beforehand (art. 17). By exception to article 17, a foreigner whose residence ends without renewal, or who has not obtained residence, is penalised 30 riyals for each day; the Minister or a delegate may waive this for accepted excuses (art. 43). The Government of Canada says you can expect heavy penalties if you overstay your visa.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

within 2 days of arrival. Done by the accommodation or the traveller.

Every foreigner must, after entering Yemen, go in person to the foreigners' registration office or the police station in the area where they live and make a declaration of their personal status and the purpose of their visit; the executive regulation sets the procedure, conditions and period (art. 9). Hotel managers, and anyone who houses a foreigner or rents them a place to live, must report the foreigner's name and address to the registration office or police within 48 hours of arrival, and report the departure within 48 hours (art. 13). Breaches are punishable by up to six months' imprisonment and a fine of up to 3,000 riyals, or one of the two (art. 42). The UK and Canadian governments say that if you stay in Yemen for more than 14 days, you must register your passport with the immigration authorities.

If not done: Imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to 3,000 riyals, or one of the two, for anyone who breaches articles 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21, 23 or 25 (art. 42).

Customs & currency

The UK government says you must declare foreign currency worth more than USD 3,000 on arrival; there is no restriction on how much you bring in, but you may not take out more foreign currency than you brought in. Importing or exporting Yemeni rials is illegal.

  • The UK Foreign Office says taking pictures in or around military sites is likely to result in arrest and arbitrary detention, and that you should not photograph people without their consent.
