Argentina visa and entry requirements

Argentina's National Directorate of Migrations publishes a visa-regime table showing, nationality by nationality, who needs a visa, and says tourists are admitted for up to three months, extendable for another similar period. Some nationals who need a tourist visa can instead apply for an electronic travel authorisation (AVE) if they hold a valid US visa in a listed category or — for nationals of countries exempt from US visas — a current ESTA or an entry into the US in the previous two years.

The payment receipt does not authorise entry into Argentina; only the AVE itself is accepted for entry. The AVE is for holders of valid ordinary passports travelling for tourism who hold a valid US visa in one of the listed categories, or, if their country's citizens do not need a US visa, a current ESTA or an entry into the United States within the last two years.

Documents the application asks for

  • Passport and U.S. visa, in one PDF — A single PDF of up to 8 MB with your valid passport and your U.S. visa; if the visa is in a previous passport, include that passport too. Images must be clear, sharp and in colour.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

The UK Foreign Office says your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Argentina. Argentina's Foreign Ministry asks consular tourist-visa applicants for a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Yellow fever (ICVP) — WHO's list of countries requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination shows no such requirement for Argentina. Argentina's Ministry of Health lists Formosa, Misiones, Corrientes and parts of Jujuy, Salta and Chaco as areas with risk of yellow fever circulation, recommends vaccination for people travelling to areas with proven transmission, and says the vaccine must be given at least ten days before arrival.

Travel insurance

Not officially stated

Decree 366/2025 (29 May 2025) amended the Migration Law so that foreigners seeking admission must present a sworn declaration of the purpose of their entry and that they hold health insurance for their medical needs; the law says this declaration becomes enforceable once its implementation is regulated, and no official source we could read states that it is being enforced. In emergencies, access to health care cannot be refused to any foreigner; outside those cases, health establishments run by the national state provide routine treatment only on presentation of health insurance or prior payment. No official source we could read states a minimum cover.

Onward or return ticket

Required

Argentina's Foreign Ministry lists a round-trip ticket reservation among the documents required for a consular tourist visa application. No official Argentine source we could read states an onward-ticket requirement for other travellers; Canada's travel advice says customs officials may ask you to show a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Proof of funds

Required

Argentina's Foreign Ministry lists proof of economic solvency (for example recent pay slips, a credit card statement or a bank statement) among the documents required for a consular tourist visa application. No official source we could read states an amount. Canada's travel advice says customs officials may ask for proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Staying past your permitted stay

A tourist is allowed a stay of up to 3 months, extendable for another similar period. Foreigners who have exceeded their authorised stay must pay an exit authorisation fee (Habilitación de Salida): 20 UMSM for nationals of MERCOSUR and associated states, 40 UMSM for others. The fee can no longer be paid at border crossings; the passenger is left with a debt and the transport company is fined. If the fee is not paid before leaving, a debt is generated, and the foreigner cannot re-enter Argentina until it is paid. Under Ley 25.871, a foreigner who stays after the authorised period is staying irregularly, and the National Migration Directorate may order them to regularise within a deadline it sets, under warning of expulsion.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Airport terminal use fee (Tasa de Uso de Aeroestación) — ORSNA's table lists, by airport group: Group A, Aeropuertos Argentina (CAT I): USD 9.00, USD 57.00, USD 25.16; Group A, Aeropuertos Argentina (CAT II): USD 9.00, USD 43.97, USD 25.16; non-concession airports (CAT I): $5,685.00, USD 51.00, USD 25.16. The quoted rows do not name the type of flight for each column. Included in the air ticket.

Passengers on commercial flights pay the airport terminal use fee when they buy their ticket, where it appears under code XR. Because it is included in the ticket, the passenger pays nothing extra. The amount depends on the type of flight (domestic, regional or international) and the departure airport. For Group A CAT I airports, which include Aeroparque and Ezeiza, ORSNA's table lists USD 9.00, USD 57.00 and USD 25.16.

Customs & currency

Argentina's tax and customs agency (AFIP) says sums below USD 10,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) may be brought in and taken out; bringing in a larger amount requires a special declaration at customs on form OM 2249A, and taking out more than the permitted amount must be done by bank transfer. For travellers under 16 the limit is USD 5,000.

International Driving Permit

Argentina is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Argentina's government (Transport, Ministry of Economy) says a foreigner arriving in the country may drive on a national licence issued by a party to the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Convention, which allows driving for a maximum of one year from entry; a national or international licence issued under the 1943 Washington Convention is also valid, and an international permit issued under that Convention is valid for one year from its issue.

Tips & warnings

Canada's travel advice says cash withdrawals from foreign bank accounts at ATMs are subject to low limits per withdrawal and per day and that substantial service charges may apply when using non-Argentine bank cards, and advises checking with your bank before you leave.

The UK Foreign Office says a common form of distraction theft reported in Buenos Aires is the "mustard scam": thieves take your bags while an accomplice pretends to help you remove mustard they have sprayed on you. If this happens, politely but firmly refuse help and walk away.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Argentina?

No, not on an ordinary passport: the Migraciones visa-regime table marks “REQUIERE VISA” for the United States only in its column for diplomatic and service passports. Migraciones says tourists are admitted for up to three months, extendable for another similar period.

Can I extend my 90-day stay in Argentina?

Yes. Migraciones says a tourist's authorised stay of up to three months can be extended for another similar period. The extension (prórroga) can be requested at the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones or at its delegations and immigration offices around the country, within the 10 days before the transitory residence expires.

Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Argentina?

Argentina's Embassy in Singapore says citizens of the People's Republic of China may enter Argentina without an AVE or a consular visa when they meet the conditions of Resolution 316/2025; for business travel it lists a valid US visa in a category equivalent to tourism or business and a stay of up to 30 days.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Iguazú Falls?

WHO's list of countries requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination shows no such requirement for Argentina, while marking Misiones and Corrientes as at risk of transmission.

Should I bring cash or use cards in Argentina?

Canada's travel advice says foreign credit and debit cards are accepted in main cities, but cash withdrawals from foreign bank accounts at ATMs are subject to low limits per withdrawal and per day, and substantial service charges may apply. You may be required to produce photo identification, such as a photocopy of your passport, when paying with a credit card.
