Democratic Republic of the Congo visa and entry requirements

The DRC embassy in Brussels says a visa is required for every foreign person wishing to enter Congolese territory, and the UK, Canadian, Australian and Italian governments say their citizens need a visa for the DR Congo, obtained before travel. The immigration service's eVisa portal (evisa.gouv.cd) is open to any foreigner wishing to come for a visit and tourism, and entitles the holder to a 7-day airport visa, extendable, at any DRC entry point. The UK government says a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter, and it advises against all travel to several provinces, including North Kivu and South Kivu.

Do I need a visa for the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

The DRC embassy in Brussels says a visa is required for every foreign person wishing to enter Congolese territory. The immigration service's eVisa portal (evisa.gouv.cd) is open to any foreigner wishing to come for a visit and tourism, and DRC embassies also issue visas.

How does the DRC eVisa work?

Apply on the official portal, evisa.gouv.cd. The immigration service (DGM) says the eVisa lets you present yourself at any DRC entry point, must be used within three months of issue, and entitles you to a single-entry, 7-day extendable airport visa (VAP), which costs USD 90 payable at the entry point.

What is the "visa volant"?

It is the DRC eVisa: the immigration service's eVisa FAQ lists the eVisa's types as the specific visa volant, the ordinary visa volant and the visa volant for family visits. The eVisa costs USD 300 and entitles you to a 7-day extendable airport visa (VAP), which costs USD 90 at the entry point.

Is the yellow fever vaccine mandatory for the DRC?

The UK government tells people travelling on a full British citizen passport that to enter the DRC they must have a certificate to prove they've had a yellow fever vaccination.

Is the DRC safe to visit?

Canada says to avoid all travel to the DRC, and the UK advises against all travel to several provinces, including North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri. Canada says armed groups control the towns of Goma and Bukavu, and that violent demonstrations, sometimes targeting foreign nationals, previously took place in Kinshasa.

Do East African Community citizens need a visa for the DRC?

No official source we could read states a visa exemption for EAC citizens: the immigration service's eVisa FAQ names none, and the DRC embassy in Brussels says a visa is required for every foreign person wishing to enter Congolese territory.
