Japan visa and entry requirements

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Japan has reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions, and that people who need a short-term visa and reside in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom or the U.S.A. can apply online for a single-entry tourism visa. Registering on Visit Japan Web in advance and presenting its 2D code lets you go through immigration procedures smoothly, and Japan Customs recommends submitting declarations electronically through it.

Staying past your permitted stay

A person who stays in Japan beyond the permitted period of stay without an extension or change is punishable by imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to JPY 3 million, or both. The Immigration Services Agency says that, in principle, a person deported for illegal stay or similar reasons cannot land in Japan for 5 years from deportation, or 10 years if they had already been deported or left under a departure order before. A person who leaves under a departure order cannot land for 1 year from departure. In one case set out on the departure-order page, a person who seeks to enter with short-term stay status cannot enter for 5 years from departure, in principle.

Customs & currency

Japan Customs says that when entering or departing Japan with means of payment — cash, checks, promissory notes or securities — exceeding ¥1,000,000 in total or its equivalent (¥100,000 if you are bound for North Korea), you must submit a declaration to Customs.

  • Japan Customs gives an adult duty-free allowance of 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages (approximately 760cc each), 200 cigarettes, 2 ounces of perfume, and other articles whose total overseas market value is under ¥200,000.
  • Canada's travel advice says certain medications are banned in Japan, including Adderall, amphetamines, codeine, methamphetamines and pseudoephedrine. It says you may bring a one-month supply of prescription medication or a two-month supply of non-prescription medication, as long as the medication does not contain narcotics (including codeine).

Cards & payments
The UK government says Japan is still a predominantly cash-based society where you may have difficulty using cards issued outside Japan, and that Japanese post offices, 7-Eleven stores and JP Post Bank have cash machines that will accept some foreign cards during business hours. Canada says credit cards are accepted in most major hotels and restaurants, and that ATMs are widely available but many don't accept foreign debit cards.
Safety — Generally safe
Canada's travel advice says crimes against foreigners are low but increasing and that petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs from time to time. International Driving Permit

Japan is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department says only International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are recognised as valid for driving in Japan, that an IDP under other conventions or treaties, including the Vienna Convention, is invalid, and that you may drive with an IDP for one year from the date of your entry into Japan. It says holders of a valid licence issued by Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Monaco, Slovenia, Switzerland or Taiwan can drive if they carry with it a Japanese translation prepared by the issuing country's embassy (or the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association for Taiwan) or the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).

Best time to visit
