Kyrgyzstan visa and entry requirements

Kyrgyzstan's Regulation on the stay of foreign citizens lets citizens of the countries in its Annex 1 — among them Australia, the UK, Germany, Canada, the US and Japan — stay visa-free for a total of 30 days in every 60-day period. It allows longer visa-free stays to some: up to 90 days in every 180 for citizens of Eurasian Economic Union states and of Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Mongolia and Moldova, up to 60 days in every 120 for Uzbekistan, and up to 180 days in every 360 for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' e-Visa portal says citizens of certain countries are eligible for the e-Visa if they meet the required criteria.

International Driving Permit

Kyrgyzstan is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Kyrgyzstan's rules on driving licences (Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 760 of 2025, paras 56–57) say citizens of Vienna Convention countries staying temporarily may drive on a national licence that meets the Convention's requirements, and that a foreign person whose licence does not meet them must have an international driving permit with it. The UK government says UK drivers staying longer than 30 days need both the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and their UK driving licence; Canada's travel advice says you should carry an International Driving Permit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Kyrgyzstan?

Kyrgyzstan's Regulation on the stay of foreign citizens lets citizens of the countries in its Annex 1 — among them Australia, the UK, Germany, Canada, the US and Japan — stay visa-free for a total of 30 days in every 60-day period; citizens of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain up to 180 days in every 360; citizens of Eurasian Economic Union states and of Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Mongolia and Moldova up to 90 days in every 180; and Uzbek citizens up to 60 days in every 120. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' e-Visa portal says you complete the online application and pay by card instead of applying through a Kyrgyz mission, and that citizens of certain countries are eligible if they meet the required criteria.

How long can I stay in Kyrgyzstan visa-free?

Kyrgyzstan's Regulation on the stay of foreign citizens gives citizens of the countries in its Annex 1 a total of 30 days in every 60-day period, and the UK Foreign Office puts it, for British visitors, as stays of up to 30 calendar days without a visa for each 60-day period, after which UK nationals must either leave or obtain the appropriate documents.

How does the Kyrgyzstan eVisa work?

The e-Visa portal says you complete the online application form and pay with a credit or debit card instead of applying through a Kyrgyz mission. It says the Tourist Visa (type "TS") is issued for short-term stays for tourism with a validity of up to 30 calendar days, and gives an application review period of 5 working days. It says the visa fee depends on visa category, type and period; no official source we could read states the amount.

Do I need to register with the police in Kyrgyzstan?

The UK Foreign Office says that if you're visiting Kyrgyzstan for more than 30 calendar days, you must either leave before the 30 calendar day period ends or register online with the State Registration Service within 5 days of entry, and that if you stay with someone who owns a property in Kyrgyzstan for longer than 30 calendar days, you and the property owner must register at the State Registration Service.

Is Kyrgyzstan safe for trekking?

The UK Foreign Office says trekking in Kyrgyzstan often involves travelling to very remote areas with a high risk of avalanches, landslides and rockfalls, that weather can change very quickly and there is a possibility of snow at higher altitudes even in summer, and that there is a basic mountain rescue service staffed by volunteers. It advises getting adequate insurance, including for any activity at high altitude, using a reputable trekking agency and not trekking alone.
