Macau visa and entry requirements

Macao’s Public Security Police exempts nationals of 88 listed countries from a visa. Holders of a valid passport get a stay of a maximum of 30 days unless its table lists otherwise: 90 days for EU and Schengen passports and some others, 14 days for Brunei and Kazakhstan, 3 months for Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and New Zealand, and 6 months for British citizens holding a British passport. Visitors who are not exempt can apply for an Entry Permit (visa-upon-arrival) at the border checkpoints on arrival, but visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam must apply for a Macao visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate.

Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: 500 MOP per day, at most 15,000 MOP

An overstay beyond the authorised period is fined MOP 500 to 800 for each full day or part of a day, up to MOP 15,000. An overstay without a justified reason that is not the non-resident's fault leads, in addition to expulsion, to an entry ban. The ban is at least one year, or as long as the overstay if it was over a year, when the person reported to the authorities voluntarily, and double that otherwise. The ban does not apply when the overstay is 30 days or less and the person is not a repeat offender, provided they pay the minimum fine immediately when they report or are detected.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

within 24 hours of arrival. Done by the accommodation.

Accommodation operators must record the check-in and check-out of guests, and of companions over 16, who do not hold a Macao resident identity card, a special stay permit or a non-resident worker card. They must send these records and the guests' identity data to the Public Security Police (CPSP) within 24 hours. They must refuse lodging to an occupant who does not provide the data or objects to its processing. Failing to meet these duties, or meeting them incorrectly, incompletely, falsely or late, is fined MOP 5,000 to 15,000.

If not done: Failing to record or send the data, or doing so incorrectly, incompletely, falsely or late: fine of MOP 5,000 to 15,000.

Customs & currency

Macao Customs says arriving travellers carrying cash or bearer negotiable instruments (such as traveller’s cheques, cheques and money orders) worth MOP 120,000 or more must declare them to customs officers, fill in a declaration and use the red channel. On departure, declare truthfully if a customs officer asks. Transit passengers stopping briefly in Macao do not need to declare.

  • Macao Customs says passengers entering Macao may bring goods for their own use without a customs declaration as long as they do not exceed the quantities in its table, which include 19 cigarettes, 1 cigar (of no more than 3 g), 25 g of leaf tobacco and 1 litre of drinks over 30% alcohol by volume.
  • Canada’s travel advice says it is prohibited to import, export or distribute e-cigarettes, vaporizers and their refills in Macao, and that convicted offenders can expect heavy fines.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Macau?

It depends on your passport. Macao’s Public Security Police exempts nationals of 88 listed countries from a visa, among them the United States, Canada, Australia and India; holders of a valid passport get a maximum of 30 days unless its table lists otherwise, such as 90 days for EU and Schengen passports and 6 months for British citizens. Visitors who are not exempt can apply for a visa-upon-arrival at the border checkpoints (MOP 200 for an individual, single entry), except visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, who must apply for a Macao visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate.

Is Macau covered by a Chinese visa?

Macao’s Public Security Police publishes its own list of visa-exempt nationalities, its own visa-upon-arrival, and Macao visas applied for through Chinese embassies or consulates. No official source we could read states whether a mainland Chinese visa is valid for Macao. Australia’s Smartraveller says that if you plan to return to mainland China after visiting Macau, you should confirm your Chinese visa allows you to re-enter mainland China.

How long can US citizens stay in Macau?

Macao’s Public Security Police exempts nationals of the United States (except holders of a US diplomatic passport) from a visa, and holders of a valid passport get a stay of a maximum of 30 days. EU and Schengen passport holders get a maximum of 90 days, and British citizens holding a British passport a maximum of 6 months.

Can I do a day trip to Macau from Hong Kong?

No official source we could read describes day trips. Macao’s Public Security Police lists the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge among its border checkpoints, and exempts holders of a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card or Re-entry Permit from a visa.

How does the Macau visa on arrival work?

Macao’s Public Security Police says visitors who have not applied in advance can apply for the visa-upon-arrival at the Visa Room of the checkpoint on arrival, and are granted a stay of a maximum of 30 days once it is approved. It costs MOP 200 for a single entry or MOP 300 for multiple entries within the stay granted (MOP 100 or MOP 150 for children under 12). Visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam must apply for a Macao visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate.
