Myanmar visa and entry requirements

Myanmar's eVisa portal says nationals of the countries on its list can apply for a tourist eVisa allowing a stay of 28 days, valid only for entry at the Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports and the Kawthaung land border checkpoint. It says ordinary passport holders of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam need no visa for tourist visits up to their exemption period through those airports, and Singaporeans for up to 30 days through all international checkpoints; Myanmar's Foreign Ministry also lists ordinary-passport exemptions for Belarus, Russia and Malaysia. Canada says land crossings may close with little or no notice or be restricted to nationals of neighbouring states, and the UK advises against all travel to parts of the country.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Myanmar?

Yes, unless you hold an ordinary passport of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines or Thailand (tourist visits of up to 14 days, entering and departing through the Yangon, Mandalay or Naypyidaw international airports), of Vietnam (30 days, through the same airports) or of Singapore (30 days, through all international checkpoints), according to the eVisa portal. Myanmar's Foreign Ministry also lists ordinary-passport exemptions for Belarus and Russia (30 days) and Malaysia (14 days). Nationals of the countries on the eVisa portal's list, including the US, the UK and Australia, can apply for the 28-day tourist eVisa. For other nationalities, Myanmar's Embassy in Kuwait says a foreign national is required to apply and obtain a visa in advance at Myanmar's missions abroad before entering the country; the Foreign Ministry lists the tourist visa at 40 USD for a stay of 28 days.

Can I enter Myanmar overland?

Canada strongly advises against all travel to Myanmar, including through its land borders, and says border crossings may close with little or no notice and entry may be restricted to nationals of the bordering states. Myanmar's eVisa portal says eVisa holders may enter only via the Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports and the Kawthaung international land border checkpoint.

Is Myanmar safe to visit?

Canada advises avoiding all travel to Myanmar and Australia says do not travel; the UK advises against all travel to parts of the country. Canada says that since October 2023 the conflict has escalated, with indiscriminate regime airstrikes causing civilian casualties and reports of increased drone strikes, and that improvised explosive devices and drones have been used in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw.

How long does the Myanmar eVisa take?

Myanmar's eVisa portal says processing takes a minimum of 3 working days (Myanmar time) for a normal tourist visa, starting when the application acknowledgement email is sent after you submit and pay online. Its FAQ says you are currently required to print out the eVisa approval letter and present it to the immigration officer on arrival.

Can I extend a Myanmar tourist visa?

No. Myanmar's eVisa FAQ says the tourist eVisa cannot be extended; if your most recent visa is a business eVisa, you can apply for an extension through the eStay system. No official source we could read states the overstay penalty.
