Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Nauru?

Yes, unless one of the exceptions below applies. The UK, Canadian and US governments say their citizens need a visa. Nauru's Immigration Regulations 2014 say a visitor's visa application must be made before entry, in Form 7, lodged with the immigration office in person, through a representative or online. The exceptions: nationals of the countries in Schedule 3, among them Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, China, Israel and Thailand, may apply on entry and pay no fee, and nationals of the visa waiver agreement countries in Schedule 5, which lists Russia and Spain, are exempt from the visa requirement.

How do I apply for a Nauru tourist visa?

Use Form 7 of the Immigration Regulations 2014 (the visitor's visa application) and attach certified copies of your passport's identity pages, a passport photo, a police certificate covering where you lived in the previous 12 months and a certificate of medical fitness; citizens of Australia and New Zealand also need a sponsor letter. Lodge it with the immigration office in person, through a representative or online. Payment must accompany the application unless you are exempt. No official source we could read states a processing time. The form lists the fee as $50 for up to one month, $150 for up to two months and $250 for up to three months, without naming the currency.

How long can I stay in Nauru?

Nauru's Immigration Regulations 2014 say a visitor's visa may be granted for a period not exceeding 3 months and for a single entry only, and list a fee that rises with the length: $50 for up to one month, $150 for up to two and $250 for up to three, without naming the currency. No official source we could read states whether a visitor's visa can be extended.

What currency does Nauru use and can I pay by card?

Canada's travel advice says the currency is the Australian dollar. The UK FCDO says credit cards are not accepted and there is only one ATM, at the Menen Hotel, which is often out of cash, and to take enough Australian dollars in cash to cover your trip.

Is Nauru safe for visitors?

The Government of Canada says the crime rate is low, though petty crime such as pickpocketing may occur, and that tourist facilities are extremely limited. The UK FCDO says medical facilities are very basic and you may need medical evacuation to Australia by air ambulance, and to check you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation.
