Nepal visa and entry requirements

Nepal's Department of Immigration says citizens of the countries it lists cannot obtain a visa on arrival and that all other passport holders may obtain one at Tribhuvan International Airport and other designated entry points; it lists tourist visa fees of USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days, all multiple entry, and says Indian citizens do not require a visa. The UK government says you can apply online for a visa on arrival up to 15 days before you arrive and then collect and pay for it at the airport.

Cards & payments
Canada's travel advice says Nepal's economy is largely cash-based, though credit cards can be used in major stores, hotels and restaurants and ATMs are available in larger cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara. The UK FCDO says ATMs are not reliable outside main tourist sites, and that in remote areas ATMs may not be available and credit cards may not be accepted.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK FCDO says there is a low rate of serious crime in Nepal but warns of pickpockets and bag-snatchers, and says political protests and strikes are fairly common and disrupt transport. It says major flooding on 26 August 2026 caused widespread damage in Rasuwa district and the Nepal–China border area, and that the authorities have warned of the risk of further flooding.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Aug 28, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Best time to visit

No official source we could read gives seasonal guidance for visitors. The UK FCDO says travel during the monsoon season, normally June to October, can be hazardous: flooding and landslides can lead to impassable roads or cut off towns and villages for days at a time.

Tips & warnings

The UK FCDO says you need a valid permit and a TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) card to enter Nepal's main trekking regions, and that all foreign independent trekkers must use a local guide or porter in national parks and protected areas.

The UK FCDO advises making sure your insurance includes cover for mountain rescue services and helicopter costs, and warns that rapid helicopter evacuation may be difficult to get in a remote area. It also reports isolated cases of trekking guides taking inexperienced trekkers to high altitudes too quickly and then calling in expensive helicopter medivacs from which the guides take a cut.

The UK FCDO says you can apply online for a visa on arrival up to 15 days before you arrive, then collect and pay at the airport. You can pay by card, but bring cash as a back-up — US dollars are preferred.

The Department of Immigration lists an overstay fine of USD 5 per day, and the UK FCDO says overstaying is a serious crime that can lead to significant fines or imprisonment. The FCDO says you can extend your visa online to a total of 150 days in one year.

Do US citizens need a visa for Nepal?

Yes. Nepal's Department of Immigration lists the countries whose citizens cannot obtain a visa on arrival — the United States is not among them — and says all other passport holders may obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and other designated entry points. It lists tourist visa fees of USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days, all multiple entry. The UK government says you can pay by card but should have cash as a back-up, with US dollars the preferred currency.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Nepal?

No. The Department of Immigration says Indian citizens do not require a visa to enter Nepal.

How does Nepal's visa on arrival work?

The UK FCDO says you can apply online up to 15 days before you arrive and then collect and pay for the visa at the airport using your submission receipt, or apply using the forms or terminals at the airport and queue. You can pay by card, but should have cash as a back-up, with US dollars preferred.

Can I extend my Nepal tourist visa?

Yes. The Department of Immigration lists the extension fee as USD 3 per day with a minimum of 15 days, and says tourist visas can be extended inside Nepal up to a combined maximum of 150 days per visa year; the UK FCDO says you can extend online to a total of 150 days in one year.

Do I need permits for trekking in Nepal besides the visa?

The UK FCDO says you need a valid permit and a TIMS card to enter Nepal's main trekking regions, and that all foreign independent trekkers must use a local guide or porter in national parks and protected areas. It points to the Nepal Tourism Board for the TIMS requirements.
