Paraguay visa and entry requirements

Paraguay's foreign ministry lists the countries whose nationals do not need a visa, among them the EU states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and says that anyone whose country is not listed does need one. The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones admits non-resident foreigners for a maximum of 90 days, extendable once, and accepts the national identity document of Mercosur and associated-country citizens as a travel document. Visa applications are made through the foreign ministry's online form, followed by an interview.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones lists a valid passport as the travel document for non-resident foreigners and says that if you enter with a travel document close to expiry, the immigration authority grants the length of stay taking the document's expiry date into account. It says the national identity document of the country of origin is valid exclusively for Mercosur citizens travelling to another member or associated country: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Yellow fever (ICVP) — Paraguay's health ministry requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from foreigners aged 1 to 59 entering from the risk zones it lists: Bolivia (Santa Cruz); Brazil (Amazonas, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Roraima); Colombia (Caquetá, Huila, Nariño, Putumayo, Vaupés and Tolima); Guyana (Boa Vista and Siparuni); Peru (Huánuco, Junín, Madre de Dios, San Martín and Ucayali). Travellers should be vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. Passengers in transit for up to 24 hours in those zones are exempt.

Staying past your permitted stay

Foreigners admitted in the categories of the relevant chapter of the Migration Law may stay up to 90 calendar days, extendable once at their request for no longer than the period first granted. When the authorised stay ends, the foreigner must leave or apply for residence; otherwise fines and other sanctions apply. A foreigner found at the migration control post to have exceeded the authorised transitory stay is fined up to 6 jornales (daily wages). A repeat offence raises the fine by up to 50%.

Customs & currency

Paraguay's tax and customs authority (DNIT) says anyone carrying USD 10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or instruments such as traveller's cheques, must declare it through the eDAV system and show the QR code to customs, and must use the red channel.

Safety — Exercise caution
The UK Foreign Office says transnational criminal organisations carry out drug trafficking and arms smuggling along Paraguay's eastern border with Brazil, mostly from Pedro Juan Caballero south to Ciudad del Este and to the Tri-Border Area, that violent crime is on the increase there, and advises particular care in the departments that border Brazil, including Amambay, Concepción, Alto Paraná, San Pedro and Canindeyú. It says a small guerrilla-style group, the EPP, operates in the north of San Pedro and the south of Concepción.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

International Driving Permit

The UN treaty records list Paraguay as a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (accession, 18 October 1965). Paraguay's National Traffic and Road Safety Law (Law No. 5016, art. 27), as published by the Library and Archive of the National Congress, says a driving licence issued abroad is valid in Paraguay for no more than three months from entry into the country; it must be current, and it allows driving cars of the category the licence authorises. The UK government says a UK photocard driving licence can be used to drive in Paraguay and that you need your driving licence and your passport showing the entry stamp with you in the car; Canada's travel advice says you must carry an international driving permit. Both governments say the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00%. No official source we could read states Paraguay's own rule on whether a permit is required in addition to a national licence.

Best time to visit

No official source we could read gives a best time to visit Paraguay. The Government of Canada says Paraguay experiences extreme dry periods between April and September and that the rainy season extends from December to March, when the eastern part of the country is more at risk of floods; it says seasonal flooding can make roads impassable, particularly in the Chaco region, and that bush and forest fires are common between mid-July and December, particularly in Concepción, Amambay, San Pedro and Canindeyú.

Tips & warnings

The UK Foreign Office says to make sure an immigration official stamps, dates and signs your passport when you arrive, that without an entry stamp you will get a fine when you leave, and that this is important at land borders, typically the crossing between Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu, where long-distance bus drivers sometimes tell foreign nationals they can complete immigration formalities in Asunción, which is not true.

Visa applications are made through the foreign ministry's online form.

Do US citizens need a visa for Paraguay?

No. Paraguay's Consulate General in New York says Law 7314/2024, which extends Law 6790/2021 for three additional years, eliminates visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who wish to enter Paraguay for tourism, provided their stay does not exceed 90 days, until 13 August 2027.

Can I enter Paraguay with a national ID card instead of a passport?

The ministry says the visa can be processed at Paraguay's consulates or at the consular sections of its embassies.

Can I stay longer than 90 days in Paraguay?
