Peru visa and entry requirements

Peru's Foreign Ministry table of visa exemptions for ordinary passports lists citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and Japan as exempt for 90 days, extendable once for the same period within 365 days of first entry, and Germany and other EU and Schengen states for 90 days in every 180 days. It lets Chinese and Indian citizens enter without a temporary tourist visa if they hold a visa valid for at least six months from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia or a Schengen state, or permanent residence in one of them. Canada's travel advice says international airports keep digital records of entry and exit instead of stamping passports.

Tourists who exceed their permitted stay must pay a fine of 0.1% of the UIT (tax unit) for each day of overstay. A Migraciones page gives the value of the UIT for 2026 as S/ 5,500. The Canadian government says overstaying is a criminal offence, that there is a fine for each day of overstay and that it must be paid when leaving the country. The UK government says overstayers get a fine and could be detained.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation.

Lodging establishments and landlords must register the foreigners to whom they provide lodging or housing rental on a free Migraciones platform. Registration is compulsory before providing the service, whether in hotels, hostels, rented houses, flats or rooms, or through platforms such as Airbnb, and the foreigner's identification data must be entered correctly so that it reaches Migraciones. The obligation has applied since 10 December 2024. Providers are fined 1 UIT for not asking for the foreigner's documents or for not registering them, and 2 UIT for not sending the data to Migraciones.

If not done: Fines for lodging providers: 1 UIT for not asking the foreigner for the travel or identity documents with which they entered; 1 UIT for providing lodging without registering the foreigner's identification data; 2 UIT for not sending the registered information to Migraciones.

Safety — Exercise caution
The UK Foreign Office says street crime, including muggings and thefts, is a significant problem in Lima, Cusco, Arequipa and other major cities; that tourists, especially those travelling alone, are at risk of 'express kidnapping', often involving armed criminals posing as taxi drivers; and that there is a higher risk in areas of serious organised crime linked to drug production, including the border areas with Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil and the VRAEM. It advises using licensed telephone or app-based taxis and not hailing taxis on the street.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

International Driving Permit

Peru is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) says foreign nationals may drive with the valid licence of their country only during the first six months of their stay in Peru, provided an international agreement has been signed and ratified, and that after that period the licence must be exchanged for a Peruvian one. The UK government says a UK photocard driving licence can be used to drive in Peru for up to 6 months if your immigration stay permit is valid; Canada's travel advice says that, as a tourist, you may use your Canadian driver's licence for the duration of your authorized stay. No official source we could read states whether an International Driving Permit is required in addition to a national licence.

The UK government says altitude sickness is a serious risk in parts of Peru, including Cusco, Puno, the Colca Canyon and Kuelap. Canada's travel advice says you're at risk of high-altitude illnesses at 2,500 metres above sea level or more, and more at risk if you ascend quickly or exercise or drink alcohol before you get used to the altitude.

The UK government warns of a risk of robbery by criminals posing as taxi drivers, especially at Jorge Chavez International Airport and bus terminals, and advises using licensed telephone or app-based taxi services, asking your hotel to book taxis, or using the official taxi companies at the airport, at desks directly outside the baggage hall.

Australia's Smartraveller says to drink boiled or bottled water.
