Sweden visa and entry requirements

The EU lists Sweden among the Schengen area countries, and says EU nationals have the right to travel freely there. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, nationals of the countries in its Annex II are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries in Annex I must hold a visa; the Schengen Visa Code sets the visa fee at EUR 90. The Swedish Migration Agency says applications go to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general, or in some countries to another Schengen country representing Sweden. The EU says ETIAS is currently not in operation.

How long you can stay

90 days in any rolling 180-day period

90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The day you arrive counts as the first day and the day you leave counts as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: on any given day, days already spent anywhere in the area during the preceding 180 still count against the 90.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

The Swedish Migration Agency says visitors who do not need a visa must have a passport valid for at least three months after they plan to leave the Schengen area; for visa applicants it must be valid for at least three months after the visa expires, have been issued within the past ten years and have at least two blank pages.

At least 2 blank pages required. Compare every country

Vaccinations

Not officially stated

No official source we read lists a vaccination certificate required for entry.

Travel insurance

Required

Under the Schengen Visa Code, visa applicants must hold travel medical insurance valid throughout the territory of the Member States and covering the entire period of the intended stay; the minimum coverage is EUR 30,000. The Swedish Migration Agency recommends that visitors who do not need a visa also have individual medical travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 and valid in all Schengen countries.

Onward or return ticket

Required

The Swedish Migration Agency says visitors who do not need a visa must still have a valid round-trip ticket with a return journey within 90 days, and a written invitation from the family member or friend they will stay with or a hotel booking confirmation; the border police check this before they enter Sweden.

Proof of funds

Required

The Swedish Migration Agency says Sweden requires SEK 700 for each day of the visit. The amount may be lower, for example for younger children, if meals and accommodation are paid in advance, or when staying with relatives or friends.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • EES — Entry/Exit System (biometric registration) — The EU's Travel Europe site says that the first time you arrive at a border crossing point since the EES started, passport control officers will take a photo of your face and/or scan your fingerprints, and your passport will not be stamped; it says this can be quicker if you register some data in advance at a self-service system, where available, and/or through a mobile application. The UK government says there is no cost for EES registration. (at the border on first entry) travel-europe.europa.eu (opens in a new tab)
  • ETIAS — European Travel Information and Authorization System — The EU's ETIAS site says an ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of the 30 European countries concerned, but that ETIAS is currently not in operation, no applications are collected, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. (before travel, once etias starts) travel-europe.europa.eu (opens in a new tab)

Staying past your permitted stay

A foreigner who intentionally or negligently stays in Sweden without the required permit, without having applied for one, is sentenced to a fine (böter). A foreigner who is not an EEA citizen or the family member of one may be expelled (utvisning) if they stay in Sweden without a passport or the permits required. If no voluntary-departure period can be given, refusal-of-entry decisions of the Police and refusal or expulsion decisions of the Migration Agency are combined with a re-entry ban, unless special personal reasons speak against it. A re-entry ban is also issued when a voluntary-departure period expires without departure. A re-entry ban is set at most five years.

Customs & currency

The EU says that if you enter or leave the EU with EUR 10,000 in cash (or its equivalent in other currencies) you must declare it to the customs authorities of the EU country you are entering or leaving.

  • The EU's Your Europe portal lists the allowances when entering the EU from a non-EU country: 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer, plus 1 litre of spirits over 22% or 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine; 200 cigarettes where the higher tobacco limit applies; and other goods worth up to EUR 300 (EUR 430 for travellers by air and sea).
  • The EU's Your Europe portal says no further payments are due on goods bought in another EU country for your own use, and that each country may set guideline values, which may not be lower than 800 cigarettes, 10 litres of spirits, 90 litres of wine and 110 litres of beer. The Swedish government says Systembolaget has the exclusive right to sell strong beer, wine and spirits at retail to the public in Sweden.

International Driving Permit

Sweden is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) says a driving licence from a country outside the EEA is valid in Sweden if it is valid in the country that issued it, has not been exchanged for a Swedish licence, and its holder has not been registered as resident in Sweden for more than one year (licences from the United Kingdom and the Faroe Islands excepted). It says a licence that does not follow the international road traffic conventions and is not issued in English, German or French is valid only together with a certified translation into English, German, French, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian, and that a licence without a photo is valid only together with photo identification.

Tips & warnings

Bring a debit or credit card: the UK government's travel advice says many shops, cafes and restaurants in Sweden do not accept cash.

The Swedish government says Systembolaget has the exclusive right to sell strong beer, wine, spirits and alcohol-like preparations at retail to the public in Sweden. Under Sweden's Alcohol Act (2010:1622), alcoholic drinks may not be sold or supplied to anyone under 20 (under 18 for folköl), but may be served to people aged 18 and over.

Canada's travel advice says movement and camping on public land in Sweden is permitted under the Allemansrätten ("Freedom to Roam") law, that camping is not permitted within 70 m of a dwelling or cultivated land, and that there are certain restrictions for specific areas, times of year and uses.

The UK government's travel advice says that during winter, snow and ice on the roads cause accidents daily, and that from 1 December to 31 March, and at any other times designated by the police, all vehicles must have winter tyres.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Sweden?

EU nationals have the right to travel freely in Sweden. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 (consolidated to 30 December 2025), nationals of the countries in its Annex II are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries in Annex I must hold a visa; the Schengen Visa Code sets the visa fee at EUR 90. The Swedish Migration Agency says applications go to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general, or in some countries to another Schengen country representing Sweden.

Do US citizens need a visa for Sweden?

No. The United States is in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU lists the United States among the countries whose nationals will need an ETIAS travel authorisation (EUR 20 application fee) once it starts; it is currently not in operation.

How much does a Sweden Schengen visa cost?

Under the Schengen Visa Code the short-stay visa fee is EUR 90; children from six and below 12 pay EUR 45, and children under six are exempt. The Swedish Migration Agency says the visa is a permit to enter and stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a 180-day period, and that for visits of more than 90 days you need a visitor's residence permit.

Is ETIAS required to enter Sweden?

The EU says ETIAS is currently not in operation, that no applications are collected, and that it will announce the start date several months before launch. It says ETIAS will be an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals and lists a EUR 20 application fee.

Can I pay with cash in Sweden?

The UK government's travel advice says many shops, cafes and restaurants do not accept cash, so make sure you have a debit or credit card with you, and Canada's travel advice says many shops and restaurants no longer accept cash.
