Tajikistan visa and entry requirements

Tajikistan's Consular Department says that from 1 January 2022 the country introduced a unilateral visa-free system allowing citizens of 52 countries to enter and stay for 30 days; its country table lists, among others, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany and France as visa-free for up to 30 days, and Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia as visa-free indefinitely. Electronic visas are applied for on evisa.tj, with an optional permit to enter GBAO selected on the same form, and visas can also be applied for at a Tajik diplomatic mission or consular post. The UK government tells British nationals they must have a visa and to apply online for an e-visa before travelling.

For an expired visa, the consular fee is increased: USD 50 for up to 5 days, USD 100 for 6 to 15 days, USD 200 for 16 to 30 days, and USD 100 for each further month. The UK government says that if you overstay, you could get a fine and will not be allowed to leave Tajikistan until you get an exit visa, which you can pay for at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Office.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation or the traveller.

Foreign citizens and stateless persons must register with the internal-affairs bodies within 10 working days of entering Tajikistan (with the foreign-affairs bodies, for diplomatic mission staff only), except citizens of countries exempt from registration for certain periods under agreements. Those who stay no more than 10 working days from entry and leave within that period need not register. Organisations and hosts that invited foreigners, and people in whose homes foreigners live, must register them within 10 working days of arrival, not counting weekends and public holidays. Foreigners holding an e-visa are exempt from registration with the internal-affairs bodies. The entry-rules page says citizens of 52 foreign states must register within 10 working days of entry and leave when their 30-day stay ends. The UK government says that if you enter without an e-visa and stay longer than 10 days, you must register with the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens (OVIR) in Dushanbe; hotels can no longer do this for you, and you must register again for each new address. It says that if you do not follow the procedure, you may not be allowed to leave until it is resolved, which may result in fines or detention.

If not done: The UK government says that if you do not follow the registration procedure, you may not be allowed to leave Tajikistan until it is resolved, which may result in fines or detention.

Customs & currency

The UK Foreign Office says travellers may bring up to USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) into Tajikistan without declaring it, that any amount exceeding this should be declared before entry, that above USD 10,000 travellers must present documents confirming the origin of the funds, and that up to USD 3,000 (or the equivalent) can be taken out without a declaration. It recommends keeping your entry declaration form until departure.

  • The UK says customs declaration forms are available in Russian and English, recommends keeping your entry declaration form until departure to prove how much money you brought in, and says failure to declare or provide documentation may result in fines or delays at the border.
  • The UK says the possession or use of drones is prohibited unless you have permission from the Tajik National Security Committee, and that without it you may be detained and your equipment confiscated.
  • Australia's Smartraveller says some medications, including codeine, are restricted in Tajikistan: confirm yours are legal, and declare all medicines and other restricted items on arrival, or you could face charges.

Cards & payments
The UK says Tajikistan is mainly a cash-only economy where very few businesses accept credit cards. It says ATMs are increasingly common in Dushanbe and other larger towns but there are none in rural areas, and most accept only Visa cards. US dollars are the most easily exchanged foreign currency, but official exchange booths may not accept damaged or marked notes, nor US dollars issued before 2013.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK Foreign Office says pickpocketing is common in crowded places such as markets and on public transport and that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Tajikistan; Canada's travel advice says the land border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan has been closed since the Taliban takeover in 2021.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Jul 11, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Best time to visit

Canada's travel advice says Tajikistan's rainy season usually extends from January to May and from October to December, and that rainfall is rare during summer months. The UK says many interior roads are only open in the summer months.

Tips & warnings

The UK government says you need a separate travel permit, in addition to a Tajik visa, for the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO); Canada and Australia also say a permit or pre-authorization is needed. E-visa applicants select it on the same electronic-visa form; the UK says others can apply through the Tajik Embassy before travelling or, in Tajikistan, through the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The UK government says you must get a permit, in addition to a Tajik visa, to travel to areas within 20km of the border with Afghanistan in the Khatlon Region, applied for at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dushanbe, and that the Tajikistan government sometimes stops issuing GBAO permits to tourists at short notice due to security concerns.

The UK advises bringing enough cash for your entire stay or withdrawing cash from an ATM in Dushanbe before travelling to other regions. It says very few businesses accept credit cards, there are no ATMs in rural areas, and official exchange booths may not accept damaged or marked notes, nor US dollars issued before 2013.

Tajikistan's Consular Department says citizens of the 52 visa-free countries must register with the relevant authorities within 10 working days of entry, and that holders of an electronic visa are exempt from registration. The UK government says hotels are no longer permitted to register guests, and that those entering without an e-visa and staying longer than 10 days must register with the OVIR office in Dushanbe.
