Vietnam is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Canada's travel advice says you must hold a valid Vietnamese driver's licence to drive a vehicle with an engine of 50CC or more. Tips & warnings

Apply for the e-visa only at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn: the Immigration Department warns that unofficial sites may charge fees not authorised by Vietnamese regulations.

Enter your full name (surname, middle and given names) exactly as it appears on the ICAO line of your passport, in capital letters. With an e-visa you must enter and leave Viet Nam through the international border gates designated by the Government, though not necessarily the same one.

Canada's travel advice says road safety is poor and fatal accidents frequently involve motorcycles, that you need a valid Vietnamese driver's licence for any vehicle of 50cc or more, including most motorcycles, that motorcycle riders and passengers must wear a helmet, and that there is zero tolerance for drinking and driving; the UK Foreign Office says British drivers need a 1968 International Driving Permit with their UK licence.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

US passport holders are not among the visa-exempt nationalities in the government resolutions we read, and Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of all countries — 25 USD single entry or 50 USD multiple entry, valid up to 90 days — at evisa.gov.vn (or thithucdientu.gov.vn). Processing typically takes 3 working days, or 3 to 15 when the application needs verification.

Which nationalities can enter Vietnam without a visa?

Government resolutions exempt citizens of the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Japan, South Korea and Russia from visas for stays of 45 days from entry, from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028; and citizens of Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland for 45 days for tourism under the Tourism Stimulus Program, from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028. No official page we could read lists the other exemptions.

How much does the Vietnam eVisa cost and how long does it take?

The e-visa costs 25 USD for single entry or 50 USD for multiple entry, is valid for up to 90 days, and is typically processed within 3 working days, or 3 to 15 working days when the application needs verification (working days exclude weekends and public holidays). It is available to citizens of all countries and territories.

Can I extend my stay in Vietnam?

No official source we could read describes extending an e-visa. The e-visa portal says e-visas are not issued to foreigners already in Viet Nam, and that e-visa holders in Viet Nam may be eligible for a new visa if invited or guaranteed by an authority, organization or individual in Viet Nam.

Does Vietnam require an arrival card or customs declaration?

The UK Foreign Office says that since 15 April 2026 foreign nationals arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City are encouraged to complete a digital arrival card online before arrival; it is not currently mandatory, but this may change or extend to other airports with limited notice. It says you must declare cash over 15 million dong or 5,000 US dollars.
