Staying past your permitted stay

Staying longer than authorised is a contravention punished by a fine of Kz 16,720 to Kz 114,400 per day, applied for no more than 30 days. After that period the foreigner is liable to expulsion with an entry ban, and return to Angola is conditional on paying the fine. The same fine applies when the overstay is detected on departure.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

within 2 days of arrival. Done by the accommodation.

Tourist establishments, local accommodation and anyone hosting non-resident foreigners must declare it to the migration authority or the nearest police unit within 48 hours of the start of the stay. The guest register may be filed electronically or by an accommodation form sent daily to the Migration and Foreigners Service (SME). Failing to communicate the accommodation is fined Kz 17,072 to Kz 34,144.

If not done: Failure to communicate the accommodation is fined Kz 17,072 to Kz 34,144.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Special Contribution for Tourism (Contribuição Especial para o Turismo) — 5% of the nightly accommodation rate charged by tourist establishments and local accommodation, for each night, up to 7 nights. Paid at the accommodation.

International tourists (non-resident foreigners) staying in tourist establishments or local accommodation pay 5% of the nightly rate for each night, up to 7 nights. The establishment collects it when the bill is settled, at check-in or check-out. Domestic tourists and international tourists under 12 are exempt. The decree enters into force 90 days after publication.

Exemptions: Domestic tourists and all international tourists under 12 years of age.

The Government of Canada says kwanzas cannot be taken out of the country.

  • Canada's travel advice says it is illegal to take turtle shells or ivory out of Angola, and that customs may keep handicrafts considered to be of cultural value.
  • Canada advises avoiding photographing airports, major roads, bridges, communications installations, military personnel and government buildings, and the UK Foreign Office says not to use cameras, binoculars or GPS equipment near any government buildings.
