Staying past your permitted stay

Illegal stay by foreigners who came on valid visas may be regularised on payment of a penalty: BDT 1,000 per day for the first 15 days, BDT 2,000 per day beyond 15 days up to 90 days, and BDT 3,000 per day beyond 90 days. A court case may also be filed under the Foreigners Act 1946. For an overstay of up to 7 days, the passport holder can leave by appearing at the Department of Immigration and Passports or the immigration authority at the airport or land port and paying the fine, service charge and visa fee. If a visa extension is applied for after the visa expires, the penalty and the visa regularisation fee apply. The UK government says you could get a fine for overstaying.

Best time to visit

No official source we could read gives a best time to visit. The Government of Canada says the rainy (monsoon) season runs from June to October, with seasonal flooding, and that the coastline is subject to cyclones; the UK FCDO gives the rainy season as May to September and warns of severe air pollution, especially from November to March.

Tips & warnings

The immigration police say the visa-on-arrival fee (US$50, excluding processing fees, or as decided by the authority) is paid at the Sonali Bank counter and that only cash is accepted; the Visa Policy 2026 lists a hotel reservation, a return ticket and proof of finance among the documents examined. The UK FCDO says you must have a return ticket and proof of funds to apply, and that officers issue the visa at their discretion.

The UK FCDO says political rallies and demonstrations can quickly turn violent, and that during demonstrations and strikes (hartals) there can be arson, violence and vandalism in towns and cities. It advises staying away from protests, demonstrations, rallies and large gatherings, and moving to a place of safety if you see a demonstration starting.

The Government of Canada says the monsoon season runs from June to October and that every year a third of Bangladesh’s territory is seriously affected; roads may become impassable, and the coastline is also subject to cyclones.

The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban districts). Canada's travel advice says that if you go, you must contact the Chittagong Divisional Commissioner's Office at least 10 days before you arrive.

The UK FCDO says both men and women should dress modestly, and women should cover their shoulders and legs in public. During Ramadan it advises checking the opening hours of shops and restaurants and following local dress codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Bangladesh?

Bangladesh’s Visa Policy 2026 says nationals of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and other European countries, Brazil, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain travelling for tourism and business will get a 30-day single-entry visa on arrival; the immigration police give the fee as US$50 excluding processing fees, or as decided by the authority. Nationalities the immigration police’s checker tells to obtain a visa apply at the nearest Bangladeshi mission; the official portal visa.gov.bd takes the online form, which is then taken with the documents and fee to the nearest visa office or Bangladesh mission. The checker says citizens of Barbados, Bhutan, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago need no visa to enter and stay for not more than 90 days.

How does Bangladesh's visa on arrival work?

The immigration police say travellers pay the visa fee of US$50 (excluding processing fees), or as decided by the authority, at the Sonali Bank counter in the visa-on-arrival area, and that only cash is accepted. Under the Visa Policy 2026 the visa on arrival is for 30 days (single entry), and the immigration authority grants it after examining the invitation and relevant documents, such as a hotel reservation, a return ticket and proof of finance in card or cash.

Can I extend my stay in Bangladesh?

The UK FCDO says that if you want to stay longer, you can apply for a visa extension from the Department of Immigration and Passports.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Bangladesh?

Yes. For Indian citizens the immigration police (Special Branch) eligibility checker says: “Visa is required to travel to Bangladesh. Please obtain your visa from nearest Bangladeshi mission.” India is not among the nationalities named in the visa-on-arrival list of the Visa Policy 2026.

Is Bangladesh safe to visit?

The UK FCDO says terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Bangladesh, that political rallies and demonstrations can quickly turn violent, and that road accidents are common. It advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
