Dominican Republic visa and entry requirements

The UK government says British citizens can visit the Dominican Republic for tourism without a visa for 30 days, and Canada's travel advice says a tourist visa is not required for up to 30 days. The Dirección General de Migración offers tourists who want to stay more than 30 days an extension (prórroga) of up to 120 days. Every passenger entering or leaving must complete the digital e-Ticket form, which Migration says is free. Under Decree No. 691-07, foreigners with permanent residence or a valid multiple-entry visa for the United States, the European Union (Schengen), Canada or Great Britain can enter for tourism with only a valid passport and a tourist card.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

The UK government says that up to 31 December 2026 British passport holders can enter and leave the Dominican Republic for tourism as long as their passport remains valid for the duration of their visit, and that the rules may change after that date.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Yellow fever (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP)) — WHO's yellow fever list (International Travel and Health, Annex 1) shows the Dominican Republic requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 1 year and over arriving from countries determined by WHO to be at risk of transmission, including travellers who transited more than 12 hours through the airport of such a country. WHO notes that the list of countries this requirement applies to differs from its list of countries at risk.

Travel insurance

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states a travel insurance requirement for the Dominican Republic. Canada's travel advice says medical facilities may require payment up front, and that private hospitals and doctors could request to see proof of your insurance before admitting you as a patient.

Onward or return ticket

Required

The UK government says you may be refused entry if you do not have proof of onward or return travel when you arrive in the country. No Dominican government page we could read states the rule.

Proof of funds

Not officially stated

No official source we could read publishes a minimum amount. Canada's travel advice says that when you enter the Dominican Republic you may need to be able to prove adequate funds for the duration of your stay, and that you will also need to provide the address where you will be staying.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • e-Ticket (digital entry and exit form) — The Dirección General de Migración says every passenger entering or leaving the Dominican Republic must truthfully complete the digital e-Ticket for the Dirección General de Migración and the Dirección General de Aduanas, under Laws 285-04, 115-17, 72-02 and 226-06. It says its e-Ticket service is free and urges travellers not to use unofficial pages that ask for data and payment for it. The e-Ticket portal (eticket.migracion.gob.do) says the form is also for the Ministry of Public Health and that the Unique Customs Declaration is only required for adults (18+). Staying past your permitted stay

Foreigners who have exceeded the stay authorised by law regularise their migration status when leaving the country by paying the fee for the overstay period. The service is offered at the administrative desks at authorised exit points in airports, ports and land border posts. The amount may vary with the total time spent in the country. The tax authority (DGII) says that a foreigner entering with a Tourist Card may stay 30 days, and after that may extend the stay by paying the fee set by the Directorate General of Migration.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista) — 10 USD per person per trip. Included in the air ticket.

The Tourist Card is a tax the Dominican Republic charges its visitors. Under Law 199-67, buying it is a requirement to enter the country for tourism without a consular visa. It currently costs US$10.00 and is valid for one entry only. Since 25 April 2018 it is included in all air tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic, so visitors arriving by air do not need to buy it at the airport. Visitors arriving by land or sea can buy it at the tax authority's (DGII) points of sale there.

Customs & currency

The Dirección General de Aduanas says no tax is charged for carrying money, but that if you enter or leave with more than US$10,000 or the equivalent in Dominican pesos or another foreign currency, or in bearer securities, you must declare it to its officers on entry or exit using the form provided for that purpose, and have documents showing the lawful origin of the funds.

Yellow fever certificate

WHO's yellow fever list (International Travel and Health, Annex 1) shows the Dominican Republic requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 1 year and over arriving from countries determined by WHO to be at risk of transmission, including travellers who transited more than 12 hours through the airport of such a country. WHO notes that the list of countries this requirement applies to differs from its list of countries at risk.

Safety — Exercise caution
The UK government says the crime rate in the Dominican Republic is high, with incidents ranging from opportunistic bag-snatching and pickpocketing to violent crime and carjacking. It says thieves on motorcycles snatch bags and valuables from pedestrians and sometimes reach through the windows of cars at red lights, and that incidents of assault against foreigners have occurred, including at beach resorts. It says you can reduce your personal risk by avoiding remote areas, particularly after dark, and by not wearing expensive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dominican Republic e-Ticket and who needs it?

The Dirección General de Migración says the e-Ticket is a digital form required by several institutions for entering or leaving the country, and that every passenger must complete it truthfully for the Dirección General de Migración and the Dirección General de Aduanas. It says its e-Ticket service is free and urges travellers not to use unofficial pages that ask for data and payment for it. The official portal is eticket.migracion.gob.do.

Do US citizens need a visa for the Dominican Republic?

No. The Dominican Foreign Ministry's visa requirements checker answers "No" to whether US ordinary passport holders need a tourist visa (TS). Every passenger entering or leaving must complete the digital e-Ticket form.

Can I stay longer than 30 days in the Dominican Republic?

Yes. The Dirección General de Migración offers tourists who want to stay in the Dominican Republic more than 30 days a stay extension (prórroga) of up to 120 days. Canada's travel advice says you can apply for an extension of up to 120 days at the Directorate General for Migration in Santo Domingo, after you arrive and before your tourist card expires, and that if you overstay your tourist card or extension you could be deported or refused re-entry.

Do I still need to buy a tourist card for the Dominican Republic?

Canada's travel advice says that if you enter by air, the cost of the tourist card is included in your airline ticket, and that if you enter by sea you can obtain the card from the General Directorate of Internal Taxes at your point of entry. It says the e-Ticket form does not replace the tourist card.

Can I enter the Dominican Republic with a US, UK or Schengen visa instead of a Dominican visa?

Yes. Under Decree No. 691-07, foreigners who hold permanent residence or a valid multiple-entry visa for the United States, the European Union (Schengen), Canada or Great Britain can enter for tourism with just a valid passport and a tourist card.
