Ethiopia visa and entry requirements

Ethiopia's Immigration and Citizenship Service says citizens of all countries are eligible for its tourist eVisa (evisa.gov.et), an electronic single-entry visa of 30 or 90 days, and that Ethiopia has launched a visa-on-arrival service for tourists from the countries it lists. It says citizens of Kenya and Djibouti who have a valid passport can enter Ethiopia without a visa.

Ethiopia's e-Visa service says travellers who stay beyond the validity period without extending are subject to fines and legal penalties, without stating an amount. The UK government says the penalty for overstaying is 30 US dollars a day, and that you will not be allowed to leave until you pay in full.

Registering your presence after arrival

A non-resident foreigner who lodges at a hotel or lodging house must present a valid travel document and be registered on a form prescribed by the Authority. Customs & currency

The UK government says you must declare any cash over 10,000 US dollars (or the equivalent) when you enter or leave Ethiopia, or over 500 US dollars when entering through a land border, and that to leave with cash above these amounts you must show the customs declaration form you got on entry. It says you can carry up to 3,000 birr in or out (up to 10,000 birr when travelling to Djibouti), and that cash above the legal limits can be seized.

  • The UK government says it is illegal to import or export satellite phones, binoculars or drones to or from Ethiopia without prior approval from the Customs and Information Network and Security Agency.
  • Canada's travel advice says exchanging money on the black market is illegal and could lead to heavy fines or detention, and to exchange foreign currency only at banks or official foreign exchange offices. The UK government says that without a receipt you are unlikely to be able to change leftover birr back.

The UK Foreign Office says Ethiopia is a cash-based society, that banking facilities including card payments and ATMs are limited and unreliable, especially outside cities, and to make sure you have enough cash before leaving cities.
Safety — High risk
The UK advises against all travel to the Tigray, Amhara and Gambela regions, to within 20km of the border with Eritrea and 50km of the boundary with Tigray in Afar, and to parts of Oromia, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz. It says all civilian flights to and from Tigray were suspended on 22 September 2026, that kidnapping is widespread in parts of the country, with incidents in the Oromia, Amhara and Somali regions, and that mugging is on the rise.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Jun 6, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Tips & warnings

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Afar, Oromia, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz, and says all civilian flights to and from Tigray region were suspended on 22 September 2026.

Apply only at evisa.gov.et: the Immigration and Citizenship Service warns that fraud websites with a similar look exist, that the Ethiopian Government has no agreement with their owners, and that applications submitted or payments made through them are not acceptable.

Canada's travel advice says Addis Ababa is located about 2,500 metres above sea level and that high-altitude illnesses may occur at high altitudes.

Canada says black-market exchange is illegal and to exchange foreign currency only at banks or official foreign exchange offices; the UK Foreign Office says to keep your receipt, because without one you are unlikely to be able to change leftover birr back.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Ethiopia?

Yes, unless you are a citizen of Kenya or Djibouti: the Immigration and Citizenship Service says citizens of those two countries who have a valid passport can enter without a visa. Citizens of all countries are eligible for the tourist eVisa at evisa.gov.et, and Ethiopia has launched a visa-on-arrival service for tourists from the countries listed on that site.

How do I get the Ethiopian eVisa?

Apply online at evisa.gov.et. The Tourist Visa page asks for a recent passport-size photo and a passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of entry, lists a single-entry eVisa of 30 days (USD 62) or 90 days (USD 152), and says that under normal circumstances processing takes 3 days. The UK government says to provide a scanned colour copy of your passport and a colour passport-sized photo.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Ethiopia?

Ethiopia's Immigration and Citizenship Service says it has launched a visa-on-arrival service for tourists from the countries listed on evisa.gov.et under Tourist Visa (On Arrival); the list begins with Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Austria and Australia. Citizens of all countries are also eligible for the tourist eVisa online.

Is Ethiopia safe to visit?

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the Tigray, Amhara and Gambela regions and to parts of Afar, Oromia, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz. The Government of Canada says to avoid non-essential travel to Ethiopia due to civil unrest, violence, fuel shortages, armed conflict and crime, and that this advisory excludes Addis Ababa, where you should exercise a high degree of caution.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Ethiopia?

WHO lists Ethiopia as requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries at risk of yellow fever transmission, including travellers who transited more than 12 hours through the airport of such a country.
