Fiji visa and entry requirements

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration says citizens of the countries on its visa-exempt list — among them the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany — are not required to obtain a Fiji visa, and that visitors are given a visitor permit on immigration clearance allowing up to 4 months of stay. Nationals of countries not on the list must apply for a visa and have it approved before travel.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Yellow fever (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP)) — The UK government says that to enter Fiji you must have a certificate proving yellow fever vaccination if you are coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Travel insurance

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states a travel-insurance requirement for entry to Fiji. Canada's travel advice tells travellers to make sure they get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Onward or return ticket

Required

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration asks for a confirmed return ticket or applicable onward travel ticket. The UK government says that at Fiji border control you must also show an onward or return ticket and a valid visa for the next country you are travelling to.

Proof of funds

Required

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration asks for funds sufficient to cover the duration of stay. No official source we could read states a fixed amount.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • Fiji Arrival Card and Biosecurity Declaration — The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji says you will be given a passenger arrival card when arriving, a legal document required by law, on which you must also state any items that need to be declared. Its laws require everyone arriving from overseas to declare all biosecurity risk goods, including food, plant, plant products, used material and animal products, and undeclared risk goods must go in the amnesty bins provided. Prohibited or declarable items found that were not declared or put in the bins bring an on-the-spot fine of FJD 400, and you are also liable for prosecution with a maximum fine of FJD 20,000, a maximum of six months' imprisonment, or both. (on arrival)

Staying past your permitted stay

A non-citizen who is not an exempted person and does not hold a valid permit is a prohibited immigrant, and their presence in Fiji is unlawful. The Permanent Secretary may order a prohibited immigrant to leave Fiji and stay out indefinitely or for a set period. Until they leave, the person may be kept in prison, in police custody or in another place of custody the Permanent Secretary authorises.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Airport Departure Tax — $200 per passenger from 1 August 2025 ($170 from 1 August 2024); the Act does not name the currency.

Any passenger boarding an aircraft at an airport in Fiji for a destination outside Fiji must pay airport departure tax of $200 from 1 August 2025 ($170 from 1 August 2024); the Act does not name the currency. A Head of State, children under 12 and transit passengers scheduled to depart within 72 hours are exempt.

Exemptions: A Head of State; transit passengers scheduled to depart within 72 hours of arrival from outside Fiji, whether or not they leave the airport; children under 12

Customs & currency

Canada's travel advice says you must make a customs declaration when in possession of currency equivalent to more than FJD 5,000 when entering Fiji and more than FJD 10,000 when exiting, and that undeclared money can lead to a fine or a prison sentence. The UK government says to declare cash in any currency worth FJD 10,000 or more.

  • The UK government says Fiji customs has strict quarantine regulations and customs officers X-ray all luggage arriving at Nadi airport; they will confiscate most fresh foodstuffs, unless you are arriving from a country with quarantine agreements with Fiji.

Safety — Generally safe
The UK government says the risk of serious crime is generally low, but there are occasional incidents including sexual assault, and tells travellers to be careful of their belongings in cities and other popular tourist destinations. Fiji is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Fiji's Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000 (regulation 21), on the Laws of Fiji site of the Office of the Attorney-General, say a driver's licence issued in another country authorises the holder to drive the relevant class of motor vehicle in Fiji, but not a class 3, 4 or 5 vehicle and not after 6 months from the date of arrival, and that the Land Transport Authority may require a duly certified English translation of the licence. Fiji's breath-test regulations set the prescribed concentration of alcohol at 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Best time to visit

Canada's travel advice says the rainy and cyclone season in the Pacific Islands Region takes place from November to April, but cyclones may occur at other times. The UK government says cyclones occur throughout the year, with a greater risk of strong winds and heavy rain during the cyclone season, and can cause flooding and landslides.

Tips & warnings

Canada's travel advice says the rainy and cyclone season in the Pacific Islands Region takes place from November to April, but cyclones may occur at other times. The UK government says cyclones occur throughout the year and can cause flooding and landslides that damage or block roads, and tells travellers to follow weather updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service.

The UK government says healthcare facilities in Fiji are limited in range and availability, that in serious medical emergencies people are often evacuated to another country for treatment, and that hospitals usually ask for immediate cash payment. Canada's travel advice says medical evacuation is very expensive and tells travellers to get insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays.

The UK government says to cover your shoulders and knees in rural villages and during kava ceremonies, that topless bathing and nudity in public is illegal, and that if you are invited to take part in a kava-drinking ceremony you should be aware of the potential risks of liver toxicity.

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration says the visitor permit given on immigration clearance allows up to 4 months of stay, and that the stay can be extended by 2 months if you apply for an extension and the fee is paid.

The UK government says there are dangerous rip tides along reefs and river estuaries, and that unless you have reliable local knowledge you should swim from beaches that have lifeguards on duty and follow the flag warning system.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Fiji?

Not if your country is on Fiji's visa-exempt list: the Ministry of Immigration says citizens of those countries — among them the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, India, France and Germany — are not required to obtain a Fiji visa, and visitors are given a visitor permit on immigration clearance allowing up to 4 months of stay. Travellers from non-visa-exempt countries must obtain an approved visa before travelling to Fiji.

How long can I stay in Fiji?

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration says the visitor permit given on immigration clearance allows up to 4 months of stay, and that the stay can be extended by 2 months if you apply for an extension and the fee is paid.

What do I need to show at Fijian immigration?

Fiji's Ministry of Immigration lists a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended period of stay, funds sufficient to cover the stay, evidence of confirmed accommodation, a confirmed return or applicable onward ticket, and a visa or permit where required. The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji says you will be given a passenger arrival card when arriving, a legal document on which you must also state any items that need to be declared.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Fiji?

No official source we could read requires it. Canada's travel advice tells travellers to make sure they get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

When is cyclone season in Fiji and should I avoid it?

Canada's travel advice says the rainy and cyclone season in the Pacific Islands Region takes place from November to April, but cyclones may occur at other times. The UK government says tropical cyclone season normally runs from November to April but cyclones occur throughout the year, and that cyclones can cause flooding and landslides, often damaging or blocking roads.
