Georgia visa and entry requirements

Georgia's Government Resolution No. 255 (last amended on 24 February 2026) lists the countries whose citizens can enter Georgia visa-free and stay for a full year, among them the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine; Chinese citizens may stay 30 days, for tourism only. Resolution No. 256 lets holders of a visa or residence permit from a listed country, such as the US, the UK or Germany, enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day period. Others apply for an ordinary visa, which can be obtained through the e-Visa portal.

Georgia's e-Visa portal says visa holders crossing the border should carry a document proving sufficient financial means, such as a bank statement for the past three months, a reference from the employer stating position and income, a document proving ownership of real estate, or a letter from a sponsor. No official source we could read states an amount, or a funds requirement for visa-free visitors.

Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: 1,000 to 3,000 GEL

A foreigner who stays in Georgia after their lawful stay has expired is fined GEL 1,000 and barred from entering for 6 months if the overstay lasts up to 3 months; GEL 2,000 and a 2-year ban if it lasts up to 1 year; and GEL 3,000 and a 3-year ban if it lasts longer. The fine may be paid before or after leaving Georgia. Until it is paid, no Georgian visa is issued and entry is refused.

Customs & currency

Canada's travel advice says you must declare to customs if you have more than GEL 30,000 or its equivalent in cash, traveller's cheques or any other type of financial instrument, and that failure to comply could result in fines and confiscation.

The UK FCDO says prices may be quoted in US dollars and euros but goods and services must be paid for in local currency (lari), that travellers' cheques are rarely accepted, and that outside major towns you may not find ATMs or be able to use credit and debit cards; it advises taking enough cash in lari if travelling to rural or remote areas.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK FCDO says crime levels are low. It advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and all but essential travel to areas immediately next to their administrative boundary lines, and says it cannot provide face-to-face support to British nationals there.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Aug 18, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Best time to visit

No official source we could read gives seasonal guidance for visitors. The UK FCDO says heavy rain, flooding and snow at higher altitudes can affect roads and bridges, making travel difficult or impossible, particularly in remote areas, and that lightning and wildfires are a risk in summer, particularly in the mountains.

Tips & warnings

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and all but essential travel to areas immediately next to their administrative boundary lines. It says anyone trading with Abkhazia and South Ossetia must have a licence issued by the Georgian government.

The UK FCDO says roads outside city centres are often badly lit and poor quality, and that heavy rain, flooding and snow at higher altitudes can affect roads and bridges, making travel difficult or impossible, particularly in remote areas. If you are travelling outside Tbilisi, particularly in remote areas, it advises making sure your vehicle is suitable for off-road driving and checking weather conditions locally.

No. The United States is on the list in Georgia's Government Resolution No. 255, whose citizens can enter Georgia visa-free and stay for a full year.

How long can I really stay in Georgia visa-free?

A full year for citizens of the countries on Georgia's visa-free list (Government Resolution No. 255), among them the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. Chinese citizens, also on the list, may stay 30 days, for tourism only.

Under Georgia's Government Resolution No. 256, holders of a visa or residence permit from a listed country, among them the US, the UK, Germany, the UAE and other Gulf states, can enter Georgia without a visa and stay for 90 calendar days in any 180-day period; the visa or permit must be valid on the day of entry.

Can I visit Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Georgia?

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and all but essential travel to areas immediately next to their administrative boundary lines, and says it cannot provide face-to-face support to British nationals there.
