Guyana visa and entry requirements

CARICOM Heads of Government welcomed Guyana's implementation of the decision that CARICOM nationals travelling to other Member States be granted a definite entry of six months. Guyana's Foreign Ministry lists the countries whose nationals do not require visas to enter Guyana, some only for diplomatic or official passports and some for 90 or 30 days; for passport holders who require a visa and may be unable to apply at a Guyanese mission, its advisory says visas will be issued on arrival. Guyana's Immigration (Passports) Order says that, except as otherwise provided in the order, the passport of a citizen of any foreign country is not accepted unless it bears a Guyanese consular visa; it exempts passports of the countries in its schedule, passports of Commonwealth countries whose law lets Guyanese enter on their passports without a visa, passports the Minister exempts and passports covered by a Visa Abolition Agreement in force.

  • Yellow fever (ICVP) — WHO lists Guyana as requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 1 year or over arriving from countries at risk of yellow fever transmission, including travellers who transited more than 4 hours through the airport of such a country. Guyana is itself on WHO's list of countries at risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • Malaria prophylaxis — Not an entry requirement. The UK government lists malaria in the interior of the country among the health risks in Guyana.

Proof of funds

The Foreign Ministry's advisory says visitors who receive a visa on arrival must provide, on arrival, evidence of finances to cover expenses for 30 days and the name and address of their inviter or sponsor, or of their hotel if they are tourists. No official source we could read states a sum.

Staying past your permitted stay

Under the Immigration Act, a person granted a temporary permit, including as a visitor, who does not leave Guyana by the end of the permitted period, unless it was extended, is deemed a prohibited immigrant. An immigration officer may then order them to leave immediately or within a set period, or have them arrested and brought before a magistrate's court for removal.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Travel Tax — 3,500 GYD per person per trip. Included in the air ticket.

The Guyana Revenue Authority says all travellers under 65, unless exempted, pay a Travel Tax of GYD 3,500, which is now included in the travel itinerary instead of being paid at the airport. The reduced rate for people aged 65 or over requires a Guyanese passport and residence in Guyana.

Customs & currency

Guyana's Financial Intelligence Unit says travellers carrying foreign currency amounting to more than US$10,000 or its equivalent into or out of Guyana must make a foreign currency declaration, on forms available at all international airports and border and ferry crossings, including Lethem and the Guyana/Suriname ferry. Failure to declare, or knowingly making an untrue declaration, is an offence; the penalties listed are a fine of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, imprisonment for six months and forfeiture of the undeclared currency.

  • Canada's travel advice says importing or exporting restricted items, including firearms and ammunition, without the proper permits may result in heavy fines and prison sentences.
  • The UK government's travel advice says there are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Guyana, and that you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Canada's travel advice says to carry enough cash to cover anticipated expenses, to exchange foreign currency only at banks, hotels and established money exchange bureaus (cambios), and that only major hotels accept credit cards. The UK government's travel advice says to go inside the money exchange or shop rather than exchange money on the street.

The UK government's travel advice says visitors can normally stay for 30 days, and that the Guyanese authorities can arrest visitors who overstay or abuse the conditions of their stay, with a possible one-year prison sentence, a fine of up to 50,000 Guyana dollars and deportation at your own expense. Immigration Support Services says it grants a maximum of two extensions of stay, each of three months. Canada's travel advice says to ensure that authorities stamp your passport on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Guyana?

It depends on your passport. CARICOM nationals are granted a definite entry of six months. The Foreign Ministry's list of countries whose nationals do not require visas (updated 17 July 2025) names, among others, the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Italy with no period stated; Albania, Brazil and Peru for 90 days; and South Korea, Singapore and South Africa for a period not exceeding 30 days. Guatemala is listed only for holders of diplomatic or official passports and holders of a US Permanent Resident Card or a valid US, Canadian or Schengen visa. The UK government says British visitors can normally stay for 30 days.

How does CARICOM free movement work in Guyana?

CARICOM Heads of Government welcomed Guyana's implementation of the decision that CARICOM nationals travelling to other Member States be granted a definite entry of six months, subject to the right of Member States to reject undesirable persons and to prevent persons from becoming a charge on public funds.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Guyana?

WHO lists Guyana as requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 1 year or over arriving from countries at risk of yellow fever transmission, including travellers who transited more than 4 hours through the airport of such a country, and lists Guyana itself as a country at risk of yellow fever transmission.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Guyana?

The Foreign Ministry's advisory says that for persons travelling from countries whose passport holders require a visa to enter Guyana and who may be unable to apply at any of Guyana's missions or consulates, visas will be issued on arrival. Immigration Support Services takes the visitor visa application online, with a mandatory letter requesting a visa on arrival.

Can I extend my stay in Guyana?

Yes. Immigration Support Services takes extension applications with a letter to its Head requesting the extension and evidence of finance to cover the extended stay. It says each extension is for three months, that a maximum of two are granted, and that the processing fee is GYD 5,125 (GYD 28,700 if the extension granted exceeds three months).

Is Guyana safe for tourists?

The UK government's travel advice says attacks and muggings, sometimes with knives or firearms, have occurred in broad daylight but are more common at night, names Stabroek Market, Tiger Bay, Albouystown and Sophia in Georgetown among the areas affected, and suggests arranging a car or taxi booked by your hotel or with a licensed operator. Canada's travel advice says travel to the interior is not safe due to low police presence, and the UK says medical facilities are very limited, even in Georgetown.
