Honduras visa and entry requirements

Honduras's own per-nationality visa list is no longer online, so this page gives the entry rule only for passports an official source still states. The National Institute of Migration says a tourist may stay up to 90 days, extendable by 30 days, and distinguishes a consular visa from a "consulted" visa that it must validate first. It says citizens of Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua can use a national identity card or a passport under the CA-4 agreement. The Institute runs an online immigration pre-check (prechequeo).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Honduras?

It depends on your passport, and Honduras's own per-nationality visa list is no longer online. Foreign governments' travel advice says Canadian, Dutch and Italian citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days, and the UK Foreign Office says British citizens must have one. The National Institute of Migration says tourists may stay up to 90 days, extendable by 30, and distinguishes a consular visa from a "consulted" visa that it must validate first.

What is the Honduras prechequeo form?

An online immigration pre-check (prechequeo migratorio) run by Honduras's National Migration Institute at prechequeo.inm.gob.hn. You receive a one-time token by email to do the pre-check in its application, and can download your pre-check to present to the immigration inspector. No official source we could read says whether it is mandatory.

How does the CA-4 90-day rule work in Honduras?

Canada's travel advice says that under the CA-4 agreement Canadian tourists can travel between Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua for up to 90 days, with the length of stay set by the immigration officer at the first entry point. An extension of up to 30 days must be requested and paid for at the National Migration Institute before the first stay expires, and Honduras allows a maximum of 120 days; after that you must change your status, leave the CA-4 region or travel to El Salvador.

Is Honduras safe for tourists?

The UK FCDO says Honduras has one of the highest violent crime rates in Latin America; most serious crime does not affect tourists, but incidents can happen anywhere, even in tourist areas. Canada says the Bay Islands are generally safe, with lower violent crime, and advises avoiding non-essential travel to some areas, including within 20 km of the borders with Guatemala and El Salvador (with listed exceptions such as Copán Ruinas and the El Florido crossing) and the eastern neighbourhoods of San Pedro Sula. Both advise avoiding road travel at night.

Can I pay in US dollars on Roatán?

The UK FCDO says US dollars are widely accepted for exchange and payment in Honduras, and that British pounds are difficult to exchange. It advises checking with your hotel which ATMs to use, especially in Roatán.
