India visa and entry requirements

India's Bureau of Immigration says visa-free entry is available to citizens of Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives; for others a valid passport and a regular visa, e-Visa or OCI card are required. Citizens of the countries and territories on India's e-Visa list can apply online for an e-Tourist Visa of one month, one year or five years; the portal's fee table gives each nationality's fee, and its FAQ says indianvisaonline.gov.in is the only official website to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India's visa portal says a valid passport and a regular visa, e-Visa or OCI card are required for entry, except for those exempted under bilateral arrangements, and the Bureau of Immigration lists visa-free entry only for citizens of Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. US citizens are on the e-Tourist Visa fee table (one month, one year or five years); the portal says to apply at least 4 days before arrival.

How much does an India eVisa cost?

The portal's e-Tourist fee table lists, for most nationalities, USD 10 for the 30-day visa from April to June and USD 25 from July to March, USD 40 for one year and USD 200 for five years; some nationalities pay different amounts (US citizens USD 160 for five years) or nothing. A 3% bank transaction charge is added.

How long does the India eVisa take?

No official source we could read states how long an e-Visa takes to process. The portal says e-Tourist and e-Business applications may be made at least 4 days before arrival and up to 120 days ahead, and that the fee must be paid at least 4 days before the expected date of travel.

Do I need vaccinations to enter India?

Only in certain cases. India's Bureau of Immigration says anyone arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country by air or sea must hold a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, and that those without one who have visited or transited such an area will be kept in quarantine for up to 6 days. WHO's country list says India requires proof of oral polio vaccination from resident national travellers arriving from certain polio-affected countries.

Can I extend an India eVisa?

No. The e-Visa portal says e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. The one-year and five-year e-Tourist Visas allow multiple entries, and the maximum stay in India during one calendar year should not exceed 180 days.
