Kosovo visa and entry requirements

Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the countries whose citizens need no short-stay visa (stays under 3 months) — among them EU states, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and its neighbours Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. Holders of a valid multi-entry Schengen visa or a biometric residence permit issued by a Schengen state can also stay up to 15 days without a Kosovo visa. Other nationalities, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is not on the list, apply in person at a Kosovo diplomatic or consular mission.

It states no separate rule for visa-free visitors; the UK government says a passport must be undamaged and valid for the duration of the stay. Citizens of EU and Schengen states, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Holy See, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia can enter with a valid biometric ID card.

The UK government says Kosovo's public health system is poorly funded and advises adequate travel health insurance.

Customs & currency

  • The UK government says European green card vehicle insurance is not valid in Kosovo: buy local third-party insurance at the border or in the nearest town, and carry enough euros in cash to pay for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Kosovo?

Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the countries whose citizens need no short-stay visa (stays under 3 months), including EU and Schengen states, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and its neighbours Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. Holders of a valid multi-entry Schengen visa or a Schengen biometric residence permit can also enter visa-free for up to 15 days. Other nationalities, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is not on the list, apply in person at a Kosovo diplomatic or consular mission.

Can I enter Kosovo with a Schengen visa?

Yes — Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says holders of a valid multi-entry Schengen visa, or of a valid biometric residence permit issued by a Schengen state, can enter Kosovo without a Kosovo visa, for a stay limited to 15 days. It names no such exemption for US or UK visas.

Can I travel between Kosovo and Serbia?

Crossings operate, but direction matters. The UK government says Serbia does not consider its crossing points with Kosovo to be official international border crossings: you can travel from Serbia to Kosovo and back, but not from Kosovo into Serbia without a Serbian entry stamp. It advises taking a route through a third country.

What currency is used in Kosovo?

The euro: the UK government says to carry cash in euros to pay for local car insurance, and Canada's travel advice says Kosovo's economy is largely cash-based, with credit cards accepted in some larger establishments and banking machines in urban centres.

Is Kosovo part of the Schengen Area or the EU?

No. The European Commission says the Schengen area is made up of 29 countries — 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein — and Kosovo is not among them.

How are Kosovar passport holders treated abroad?

Regulation (EU) 2023/850 exempts holders of biometric passports issued by Kosovo from the visa requirement for travel to the EU Member States, from the start of ETIAS or 1 January 2024, whichever came first. No official source we could read covers how other countries treat the passport.
