The UK government says Norway follows Schengen area rules, and EU nationals have the right to travel freely there. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 (consolidated to 30 December 2025), nationals of the countries in its Annex II, including the United States and the United Kingdom, are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries in Annex I must hold a visa. Canada's travel advice says Svalbard, although Norwegian territory, is not part of the Schengen area.

90 days in any rolling 180-day period
90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The day you arrive counts as the first day and the day you leave counts as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: on any given day, days already spent anywhere in the area during the preceding 180 still count against the 90.
This limit is the one set for travellers who need permission to enter. It does not cap a stay you make under freedom of movement.

Under the Schengen Visa Code, visa applicants must hold travel medical insurance valid throughout the territory of the Member States and covering the entire period of the intended stay; the minimum coverage is EUR 30,000. No official source we could read states an insurance requirement for visa-exempt visitors.
No official source we could read states that a return or onward ticket is required. The UK government tells British travellers that at Norwegian border control they may need to show a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of travel insurance, and prove they have enough money for their stay.
The European Commission's table of reference amounts says Norway assesses sufficient means on a case-by-case basis: NOK 300 per day with hosted or prepaid accommodation, NOK 1,300 per day without proof of accommodation, and at least NOK 1,000 per person per day when more than one person travels. The UK government tells British travellers they may need to prove they have enough money for their stay.
A foreigner who intends to stay in Norway for more than three months without working must hold a residence permit; stays in other Schengen countries count as stays in Norway. Breaching § 55 first or second paragraph is punishable by a fine, up to six months' imprisonment, or both. A foreigner may be expelled for serious or repeated breaches of the Act or of the Border Act, for knowingly or grossly negligently giving materially false or clearly misleading information, or for evading a decision imposing a duty to leave. Expulsion bars later entry to Norway and the Schengen and EU area, permanently or for a limited period of at least one year. An entry ban given under § 66 first paragraph (a), (d) or (f) or second paragraph may be for one, two or five years, and for more than five years where public order or fundamental national interests make it necessary.
From 1 July 2026, a municipal council may introduce, by regulation, an overnight levy of 3 percent of the price paid for the overnight stay, excluding VAT. It applies to rooms, flats, cabins, houses and similar at hotels, hotel ships, hostels and other accommodation, including private letting, where the guest has the place between midnight and 6 a.m. and for under 30 consecutive days. The seller calculates it, collects it from the customer and pays it to the municipality where the stay takes place.
Exemptions: The levy covers only stays where the customer has the accommodation between 24.00 and 6.00 and for under 30 consecutive days.
Norwegian Customs says that if you are bringing currency with a value corresponding to more than NOK 25,000 to or from Norway, you must notify Norwegian Customs; the rule applies to Norwegian and foreign notes, coins and other means of payment.
Norway is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The Norwegian Public Roads Administration says that, for most countries outside the EU/EEA, you can use your driving licence for three months if you are staying in Norway temporarily, and that you need an international driving licence in addition to your regular licence if, for example, your licence does not have a photo, is written in an alphabet other than the Latin alphabet, or has categories different from the international categories under the Geneva or Vienna Convention. It says different rules apply to licences from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan and Ukraine: licences from the UK and Switzerland give the same rights as a licence issued in an EEA country; a Japanese licence can be used for all vehicle categories for three months, and for a passenger car (category B) for one year; and a Ukrainian licence is valid as long as Norway offers temporary collective protection to Ukrainians.

Drinks of up to 4.7% may be sold from 08:00 to 18:00, ending at 15:00 on the day before a Sunday or public holiday; the municipal council may restrict or extend these hours.

Canada's travel advice says Svalbard is Norwegian territory but not part of the Schengen area. You need a valid passport to enter it, and you must meet Schengen entry rules when you return to mainland Norway.
EU law describes Norway as a non-EU member of the Schengen area. The UK government tells British nationals they can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Norway, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and that visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

The EU says an ETIAS travel authorisation will be an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of the 30 European countries concerned, with a EUR 20 application fee, valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It says ETIAS is currently not in operation, no applications are collected, and the start date will be announced several months before launch. The official site is travel-europe.europa.eu.
