International Driving Permit

Qatar is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Hukoomi, the Qatar government portal, says it is a legal requirement to hold a valid licence to drive in Qatar; that visitors can drive for one week (7 days from arrival) on approved licences from some countries; that a driver who wishes to drive for longer than a week can apply for a temporary licence valid for 3 months; and that a valid international driving licence can be used for up to six months from the date of entry. The UK government says that if you do not have a Qatari driving licence, you need both the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and your UK driving licence with you in the car, and that to drive for longer than 6 months you need a Qatari driving licence. Canada's travel advice says you can drive in Qatar with your Canadian driver's licence for up to 7 days and must carry an international driving permit to drive beyond 7 days. The UK government also says driving under the influence of any amount of alcohol is punishable by a prison sentence or a fine, or both. No official source we could read lists the countries whose licences are approved, or states whether an international driving permit is required in addition to a national licence.

How long can EU citizens stay in Qatar?

Qatar's consulate in Hong Kong lists every EU member state except Ireland among the nationalities granted visa-free entry on arrival at Hamad International Airport, with a maximum stay of 90 days in total, in a single trip or several, within a waiver valid for 180 days that cannot be extended. It lists a passport valid for at least six months and a confirmed onward or return ticket as terms. No official source we could read states the rule for Irish citizens.

What is Hayya and do I need it to enter Qatar?

Hayya lists a passport valid for at least 3 months from arrival, proof of accommodation, a return flight ticket and the Hayya E-Visa as the requirements for entry through Hayya, and says the E-Visa fee is QAR 100.

Can tourists drink alcohol in Qatar?

The UK FCDO says only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars can sell alcohol and the legal drinking age is 21, and that it is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public: drinking in a non-licensed public place could bring a prison sentence of up to 6 months or a fine of up to QAR 3,000.

Can I extend my visa-free stay in Qatar?

The UK government says British visitors who need to stay longer than 30 days must extend their visa waiver through the Qatar Ministry of Interior before it expires, or they may be fined. Hayya says an E-Visa can be extended before its expiry at the Directorate of Passport at Hamad International Airport. No official source we could read states the length of the extension.
