Taiwan visa and entry requirements

Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) lists the nationalities eligible for visa-exempt entry — up to 90 days for countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, up to 30 days for Malaysia, Singapore and some others, and 14 days for Brunei, Oman, the Philippines and Thailand. It lists other nationalities as eligible for an eVisa when they meet the relevant criteria, and says foreign nationals not eligible for an eVisa apply at a Taiwan overseas mission. Nationals of India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam can apply online for a Travel Authorization Certificate if they meet its requirements.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

BOCA says visa-exempt entry requires a passport with remaining validity of at least six months as of the date of entry, and that US and Japanese nationals need a passport valid for the intended period of stay.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Polio (Proof of oral or inactivated polio vaccination received within the past year) — BOCA says applicants for Taiwan (ROC) visas who have resided in or visited Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Cameroon, Chad, Laos or South Sudan for four weeks or more within the past year must provide proof of having received the oral or inactivated polio vaccine within the past year.

Onward or return ticket

Required

BOCA says visa-exempt entry requires a confirmed return air or sea ticket, or a ticket and a visa for the next destination, and a confirmed seat reservation for the departure flight.

Proof of funds

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states a proof-of-funds requirement for all visitors, or an amount. BOCA says holders of Brunei, Philippines and Thailand passports entering visa-free must have proof of a hotel booking, their host or sponsor's contact information and sufficient travel funds.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • Taiwan Arrival Card — The National Immigration Agency's TWAC site says the arrival card is to be submitted by foreign nationals without an Alien Resident Certificate, resident visa or diplomatic ID card, by people of the Mainland Area and of Hong Kong and Macau holding multiple entry and exit permits, and by nationals without household registration; submission is free, within 7 days before arrival. Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: 10,000 to 50,000 TWD

A national without household registration in the Taiwan Area, or a foreigner, who overstays a visit or residence is fined NT$10,000 to 50,000. The National Immigration Agency may prohibit the entry of a foreigner who has overstayed, for at least 1 year and no more than 7 years from the day after the foreigner left.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Airport service fee for departing air passengers (出境航空旅客機場服務費) — 750 TWD per person per trip. Included in the air ticket.

Passengers departing on civil aircraft pay an airport service fee, which the airline collects in the airfare: NT$750 per person from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028, and NT$1,000 per person from 1 September 2028. Children under 2 are exempt.

Exemptions: Children under 2 years of age.

Customs & currency

The UK government says to declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is higher than NT$100,000 or US$10,000.

  • The UK government says not to bring animal products into Taiwan without authorisation, that you may face a heavy fine if caught, and that customs officials have increased inspections because of African Swine Fever in pork products.
