Uzbekistan visa and entry requirements

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry says foreign citizens need an entry visa except citizens of countries with a visa-free regime, which it lists — up to 30 days for countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. It says citizens of the countries in its Appendix 1 can obtain an electronic visa at e-visa.gov.uz, for which the portal gives a fee of USD 20 for single entry; the portal tells nationals of countries not on that list to contact an Uzbek Foreign Ministry office abroad.

Staying past your permitted stay

Under the Code of Administrative Responsibility, a foreigner who violates the rules of stay in Uzbekistan, including by evading departure after the period of stay ends, is fined five times the base calculation amount for up to ten days, fifteen times for more than ten and up to thirty days, and twenty-five times for more than thirty days. A foreigner who does not pay is expelled and barred from entering for one year; one who repeats the violation within a year of a penalty is expelled and barred for three years.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation or the traveller.

Foreign nationals must register at their place of residence or place of stay. Foreign nationals permanently living in other countries must register at their place of stay no later than three working days after entering Uzbekistan, unless an international treaty or Uzbek law sets another period. In accommodation facilities, the facility's responsible staff register guests through the E-mehmon system. Owners of housing, or persons entitled to dispose of it, who provide living space must register those persons in good time. Breaking the rules of stay, including the registration procedure at the place of stay, is fined five times the base calculation amount.

If not done: Breaking the rules of stay, including the registration procedure at the place of stay: fine of five times the base calculation amount (Code of Administrative Responsibility, art. 225).

Other compulsory government charges

  • Tourist (hotel) fee — A percentage of the base calculation amount per day, by type and size of accommodation. Paid at the accommodation.

Under a Cabinet of Ministers resolution, accommodation providers collect a tourist (hotel) fee for each day of stay from everyone except children under 16; for foreign citizens the amount is a percentage of the base calculation amount set by accommodation type and size. It is not collected in districts and towns outside the regional centres, Tashkent, Nukus and listed tourist zones.

    Exemptions: Children under 16.

Customs & currency

The UK government says you need to complete a customs declaration on entry if you bring in significant amounts of money, the threshold being 10,000 US dollars, in two copies that customs officials sign and stamp; that undeclared currency may be confiscated; and that you cannot leave with more foreign currency than you brought. Canada's travel advice says you must declare any foreign currency equivalent to more than USD 2,000.

  • The UK government says the import and use of drones in Uzbekistan is largely prohibited: you must get a licence to import one and permission to use it before you arrive, and without permission you can be fined or get a prison sentence.
  • The UK government says to check Uzbekistan's lists of prohibited and restricted medicines before travel, to bring a doctor's prescription for prescription medicines and declare them on your customs declaration form, and that some non-prescription medicines in the UK, including codeine, cause problems on entry.

Cards & payments
The UK government says internationally issued credit cards are not widely accepted outside Tashkent and the main cities, that very few ATMs outside the main cities accept international cards, and to bring enough cash or withdraw it in a main city before travelling to the regions. The Government of Canada says credit cards are not widely accepted, except in larger hotels, restaurants and cafés in major cities.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK government says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common, especially in crowded places like bazaars and on public transport, that terrorist attacks in Uzbekistan cannot be ruled out, and that you must carry your passport with you at all times.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

International Driving Permit

Uzbekistan is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The UK government says you need to have both the 1968 version of the international driving permit (IDP) and your UK driving licence with you in the car in Uzbekistan. Canada's travel advice says a Canadian driver's licence alone is not acceptable to drive in Uzbekistan and that you must carry an international driving permit. No official Uzbek source we could read states whether a permit is required in addition to a national licence.

Tips & warnings

The UK government says you must register with the local district OVIR within 3 days of your arrival, that hotel staff register guests, and that private hosts register you with their local OVIR or on the Emehmon system. Canada's travel advice says the registration slip may be requested upon leaving Uzbekistan.

The UK government says the import and use of drones in Uzbekistan is largely prohibited, that you must get a licence to import one and permission to use it before you arrive, and that without permission you can be fined or get a prison sentence.

The UK government says to change money only through official exchange booths and that it is illegal to change money on the black market, with harsh penalties. Canada's travel advice says you can exchange money at official exchange counters at international airports or at any bank and major hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Uzbekistan?

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry lists the countries whose citizens have a visa-free regime, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States (up to 30 days); the page was last updated on 1 June 2026. It lists countries whose citizens can obtain an electronic visa, among them Egypt, India, Thailand and Vietnam; the eVisa portal gives a fee of USD 20 for single entry and tells nationals of countries not on the list to contact an Uzbek Foreign Ministry office abroad.

Do US citizens need a visa for Uzbekistan?

No. Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry lists the United States of America under its visa-free regime of up to 30 days, and says that to stay more than 30 days a foreign citizen must obtain one of Uzbekistan's entry visas.

How does the Uzbekistan eVisa work?

The eVisa portal says you apply online, uploading a facial photo and a copy of the passport data page, at least 3 working days before the planned date of arrival. The fee is USD 20 for single entry, USD 35 for double entry and USD 50 for multiple entry; applications are considered within 2 working days, the eVisa allows a stay of up to 30 days, and it is valid for entry within 90 days from the date of registration.

Do I have to register my stay in Uzbekistan?

The UK government tells people travelling on a full British citizen passport that they must register with the local district OVIR within 3 days of their arrival; hotel staff register guests, and private hosts register them with their local OVIR or on the Emehmon electronic system. It says that if they are unable to account for their whereabouts or fail to get registered, they could get a fine for each day that is missing or late and possibly be deported.

How long can I stay in Uzbekistan visa-free?

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry says the 30-day and 60-day visa-free regimes run from the moment of crossing the state border. It lists Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine with a visa-free regime of unlimited duration, Tajikistan with up to 30 days and Kyrgyzstan with up to 60 days. The eVisa allows a stay of up to 30 days; for longer stays the Ministry says an entry visa is needed.
