Entry requirements

Passport validity

The UK government says that to enter Brunei your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Vaccinations

Conditional
  • Yellow fever (International Certificate of Vaccination) — WHO's country list gives Brunei's requirement as proof of yellow fever vaccination for travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, and for travellers who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of such a country.

Travel insurance

Required

Canada's travel advice says that when entering Brunei you must be able to show sufficient proof of medical insurance to customs officials, covering the entire length of your stay, and that without proof of insurance your visa will only be valid for two weeks. Australia's Smartraveller says you're required to hold medical insurance for the duration of your visa, with the minimum coverage depending on the type of visa. No Brunei government source we could read states this rule.

Onward or return ticket

Required

Brunei's Foreign Ministry lists a copy of a confirmed return flight ticket and a copy of accommodation in Brunei among the documents required for a visa application. No official source we could read states an onward-ticket check for visa-free visitors.

Proof of funds

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states a proof-of-funds requirement or amount for visitors to Brunei.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • Brunei E-Arrival Card — The UK government says you must submit an e-arrival declaration form to enter Brunei, before you travel, as it may be requested at check-in, and that you do not need to complete it if you are not passing through immigration. The US Department of State says all travellers are required to obtain an E-Arrival Card registration approval before arrival by air, land and sea, that no payment is required for the registration, and that transit travellers are exempted. (before arrival; it can also be done at the immigration control post on your phone) imm.gov.bn (opens in a new tab)

Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: up to 4,000 BND

Under the Immigration Act, remaining in Brunei after a pass expires or is cancelled is unlawful. Overstaying up to 90 days is punishable on conviction by a fine of up to $4,000, imprisonment of up to 6 months, or both. Overstaying more than 90 days is punishable by imprisonment of 3 months to 2 years and at least 3 strokes of whipping.

Customs & currency

The US Department of State gives BND 15,000 (about US$11,000) as Brunei's currency limit, both on entry and on exit. No Brunei government source we could read states the threshold.

  • The UK government says there are severe penalties for drug offences in Brunei including, in some cases, the death penalty. Canada's travel advice lists possession of pornographic material, possession of firearms or weapons, gambling and promoting any religion other than Islam among activities that are illegal and can bring severe penalties.

Brunei is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Brunei's Land Transport Department says on one page that a foreigner holding a foreign driving licence must have an International Driving Permit issued in their country of origin to drive in Brunei, and that foreigners holding a private-vehicle licence from a country party to the 1949 Geneva Convention may drive for not more than a year; another of its pages says Brunei recognises valid international driving licences and valid licences issued in other countries for three months, after which they must be converted to Brunei licences.
