Indonesia visa and entry requirements

Indonesia offers a visa on arrival — which can also be applied for online as an e-VoA — costing IDR 500,000 for a stay of up to 30 days, extendable once, to citizens of the countries on its list, and admits the nationals on its visa-free list (among them Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil and Türkiye) for up to 30 days without a visa. Indonesian Customs says every passenger entering or leaving Indonesia must submit a digital customs declaration, which is free. Indonesia's Immigration Law (Law No. 6 of 2011) says every foreigner entering Indonesia must hold a valid visa that is still in force, unless that law or an international agreement provides otherwise.

  • Yellow fever (ICVP) — WHO says Indonesia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Travel insurance

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states a travel-insurance requirement for entry to Indonesia. Canada's travel advice tells travellers to get insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration lists a return ticket or a ticket to continue to another country among the requirements for a visa on arrival and for a visa-free visit.

Applicants for the C1 visitor visa must provide proof of living expenses in Indonesia: a bank statement in the foreigner's or sponsor's name for the last 3 months of at least USD 2,000 or the equivalent. No official source we could read states an amount for visa-on-arrival or visa-free visitors.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • All Indonesia arrival card — The immigration e-Visa portal states that all travellers are required to submit an arrival card within 3 days before arriving in Indonesia. It is filed on the immigration authority's All Indonesia site (allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id). (within 3 days before arrival) allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id (opens in a new tab)
  • Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) — Indonesian Customs says all passengers entering or leaving Indonesia must submit a digital customs declaration; it is free, and the QR code is scanned by officers at the terminal. Arrivals by air or sea file it through the All Indonesia service (allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id); arrivals by land use the customs e-CD site (ecd.beacukai.go.id). (within 3 days before arrival) allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id (opens in a new tab)
  • Bali Tourist Levy (Love Bali) — Applies to every international tourist who travels to Bali and does tourist activities. Pay once while travelling in Bali, cashless: online via the Love Bali system before entering Bali (which foreign tourists are strongly encouraged to do), at the payment counters at Bali's airport and ports, or through hotels, travel agents and attractions registered with Love Bali. The levy voucher with a QR code is sent to the email entered in Love Bali. (before or on arrival in bali) lovebali.baliprov.go.id (opens in a new tab)

Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: 1,000,000 IDR per day

The Directorate General of Immigration says a foreigner who overstays by less than 60 days is fined Rp 1,000,000 per day, and is deported and barred from entry if the fine is not paid. A foreigner who overstays by more than 60 days is deported and barred from entry directly.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation or the traveller.

Indonesian law obliges owners or managers of lodging to give data on foreign guests when an immigration officer asks (Art. 72(2)). Failing to do so after the request is punishable by up to 3 months' detention or a fine of up to Rp25,000,000 (Art. 117). The Directorate General of Immigration describes how lodging owners or managers report foreigners who check in at a hotel through its APOA application. The UK government says travellers in private accommodation must register with the local police and could be fined 5 million rupiah if they do not; hotel guests are registered automatically. Australia's Smartraveller says people staying in a private residence, including a private Airbnb or a rental, must register when they arrive.

If not done: An owner or manager of lodging who does not give the data of foreign guests after an immigration officer asks: up to 3 months' detention or a fine of up to Rp25,000,000 (Law 6/2011, Art. 117). The UK government says a traveller in private accommodation who does not register with the police could be fined 5 million rupiah.

Customs & currency

Indonesian Customs says money and/or other payment instruments such as cheques, traveller's cheques, promissory notes or bilyet giro, in rupiah or foreign currency, worth IDR 100,000,000 or more must be reported to customs officers.

  • Indonesian customs allows each passenger personal goods worth up to USD 500 duty-free; each adult may also bring at most 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 100 g of tobacco, and 1 liter of alcoholic drink. Excess excise goods are destroyed by officers.
  • The UK Foreign Office says those caught possessing, using, making or trafficking illegal drugs may face long prison sentences or the death penalty, and that cannabis and cannabis-based products, including CBD, are illegal. The Government of Canada says medicines containing morphine or codeine are controlled substances in Indonesia and cannot be brought in, even in small quantities, without prior permission from the Ministry of Health and the required documentation.

Yellow fever certificate

WHO says Indonesia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Cards & payments
The Government of Canada says credit cards are not widely accepted outside large urban centres and tourist areas, and to carry cash when visiting remote areas. The UK Foreign Office says credit card fraud is common and advises using only licensed currency exchanges, identified by a Bank of Indonesia logo and a QR code.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK Foreign Office warns of bag-snatching and pickpocketing, particularly in busy tourist areas, drink spiking in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, and deaths and serious illness from alcoholic drinks containing methanol. It says volcanic eruptions occur frequently and advises following local authorities' advice, including on exclusion zones.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

Best time to visit

The UK Foreign Office says the rainy season usually runs from October to March, while in Eastern Indonesia the wet season usually runs from April to August, and that wildfires are most severe in the dry season, usually April to September. The Government of Canada says the rainy season extends from November to March, but heavy rains are common throughout the year.

Tips & warnings

The UK Foreign Office warns of visa scams by fake visa agents and advises using the Indonesian immigration website to get or extend a visa; it says the All Indonesia arrival card is a free service and that travellers should avoid alternative websites or email links that request payment for it.

The UK Foreign Office says possessing, using, making or trafficking illegal drugs is a serious crime in Indonesia: the authorities have a zero-tolerance policy and those caught may face long prison sentences or the death penalty.

The UK Foreign Office says overstaying costs one million rupiah a day and can lead to prosecution, detention and deportation at your own cost, and advises extending a visa within the initial 30 days.

Visiting Bali? The Love Bali FAQ strongly encourages foreign tourists to pay the IDR 150,000 levy online before departure to Bali, at lovebali.baliprov.go.id; the levy voucher with a QR code is sent by email.
