Italy is part of the Schengen Area: EU citizens travel freely, and Swiss and EEA nationals enter with a valid identity card or passport; nationals of the countries and territories on the EU's visa-exempt list (Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806) can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period (the ETIAS travel authorisation is not yet in operation), and nationals of the countries on its visa-required list (Annex I) need a Schengen short-stay visa (standard fee €90 under the Visa Code). The Foreign Ministry's Visa for Italy portal asks four questions to find out whether you need a visa for Italy.

90 days in any rolling 180-day period
90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The day you arrive counts as the first day and the day you leave counts as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: on any given day, days already spent anywhere in the area during the preceding 180 still count against the 90.
This limit is the one set for travellers who need permission to enter. It does not cap a stay you make under freedom of movement.

The EU–Russia visa facilitation agreement is suspended in whole for Russian citizens (Council Decision (EU) 2022/1500). Under the Schengen Borders Code (Article 6(1)(a)), a third-country national's travel document must be valid for at least three months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area (this may be waived in a justified case of emergency) and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Schengen visa applicants must prove they hold adequate and valid travel medical insurance, valid throughout the Schengen Area for the whole intended stay, with minimum coverage of €30,000. The UK government says British visitors may need to show proof of travel insurance at Italian border control.
Italy's State Police lists sufficient means of subsistence for the intended stay and for the return among the entry conditions, and says showing a return ticket is sufficient proof. The UK government says British visitors may need to show a return or onward ticket at Italian border control.
For admission for business, medical treatment, sports competitions, religious reasons, study, transit, transport or tourism, the State Police table sets means of subsistence by length of stay: for one person, €269.60 in total for 1–5 days, €44.93 per day for 6–10 days, then a fixed amount plus a daily amount for longer stays (lower amounts per person for two or more).
Fine: 5,000 to 10,000 EUR
Unless the act is a more serious crime, a foreigner who enters or remains in Italy in breach of the Consolidated Immigration Act or of art. 1 of Law 68/2007 is punished with a fine of 5,000 to 10,000 euros. The same sanction as for not declaring presence applies to a foreigner who declared their presence and stayed beyond three months, or beyond the shorter period set in the entry visa. The re-entry ban after expulsion lasts not less than three and not more than five years, set by taking into account all the circumstances of the case.
within 8 days of arrival. Done by the accommodation or the traveller.
On entry, or within eight days of entry when arriving from a Schengen country, a foreigner declares their presence to the border authority or to the questore of the province where they are. Failure to do so, unless the delay is due to force majeure, leads to expulsion. The Polizia di Stato says that for those staying in hotels or other accommodation, the registration form signed at check-in is the declaration of presence. Hotels and all other accommodation must send guests' details to the Questura through the Alloggiati service within 24 hours of arrival, or on arrival if the stay is shorter than 24 hours.
If not done: Failure to declare presence, unless the delay is due to force majeure, leads to expulsion under art. 13 of the Consolidated Immigration Act.
Provincial capitals, unions of municipalities and municipalities on regional lists of tourist resorts or art cities may introduce, by council resolution, a tax on people staying in accommodation in their territory. It is graduated by price, up to 5 euro per night of stay. Provincial capitals with tourist presences twenty times their residents may apply it up to the maximum set by art. 14(16)(e) of Decree-Law 78/2010. The accommodation manager is responsible for paying it, with a right of recourse against the guests.
Municipalities on minor islands may, instead of the tourist tax, introduce a landing contribution of up to EUR 2.50 for passengers who disembark on the island using scheduled or commercial carriers. The shipping and air companies collect it together with the ticket price. Municipalities may raise it to up to EUR 5 for certain periods. Residents, workers, commuting students and family members of people who paid the municipal property tax there do not pay it.
Exemptions: Residents of the municipality; workers; commuting students; and family members of people who have paid the municipal property tax in the same municipality, who are treated as residents.

Italy is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Italy's Highway Code (Legislative Decree 285/1992, art. 135) says holders of a driving licence issued by a country outside the EU or the EEA must carry, together with the licence, an international driving permit or an official translation of the licence into Italian. Canada's travel advice says a valid Canadian driver’s licence must be accompanied by an international driving permit or a certified Italian translation of the licence.

The boundaries are usually marked ZTL in black on a yellow background; if you pass the sign, your registration number is likely to be caught on camera and you will be fined if you do not have a pass.
The UK FCDO says many major cities charge a small tourist tax, usually paid at your hotel and unlikely to be included in your booking. The rate varies by city and can depend on the hotel's star rating; hotels often ask for cash, so get a receipt.
The UK FCDO says that if you buy a public transport ticket from a kiosk or machine, you must validate it before you start your journey: officials patrol and issue on-the-spot fines for unvalidated tickets. Some buses and trams accept contactless payment on board.

No. The United States is on the EU's visa-exempt list (Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806), whose nationals can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Italy is among the countries that will require visa-exempt travellers to have an ETIAS travel authorisation, which is not yet in operation; the official ETIAS website gives the application fee as EUR 20.
The Schengen short-stay visa costs €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to under 12. Under EU visa facilitation agreements, nationals of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus pay €35 and nationals of Cabo Verde 75% of the standard fee. Italy's Foreign Ministry says a short stay means up to 90 days in any 180-day period, calculated as a single period for all European countries using the EES.
ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are being collected; the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. The official ETIAS website gives the application fee as EUR 20.
Italy's Consulate General in London lists a digital nomad visa for the self-employed only and a separate remote worker visa for subordinate workers. For the digital nomad visa it asks for proof of a recognised highly qualified profession; annual income of at least triple the minimum level (€8,500) set for exemption from participation in public health costs; suitable lodging; health insurance covering all hospital and medical costs for the entire stay; and at least six months' work experience in the field; and it says applications may take up to 120 days to process.
Nationals of the countries on the EU's visa-exempt list can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and Italy's Foreign Ministry says this is calculated as a single period for all European countries using the EES. EU law says no entry visa may be imposed on EU citizens; Swiss nationals enter on a valid identity card or passport under the EU–Swiss agreement, and the EEA Agreement incorporates the EU free movement directive.
