Liechtenstein visa and entry requirements

The UK government says Liechtenstein follows Schengen area rules. EU nationals have the right to travel freely in Liechtenstein, a non-EU member of the Schengen area. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 (consolidated to 30 December 2025), nationals of the countries in its Annex II are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries in Annex I must hold a visa; Liechtenstein's Immigration and Passport Office says visa-required people can apply at the Swiss representation where they live.

How long you can stay

90 days in any rolling 180-day period

90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The day you arrive counts as the first day and the day you leave counts as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: on any given day, days already spent anywhere in the area during the preceding 180 still count against the 90.

Vaccinations

Not officially stated

No official source we read lists a vaccination certificate required for entry.

Travel insurance

Required

Under the Schengen Visa Code, visa applicants must hold travel medical insurance valid throughout the territory of the Member States and covering the entire period of the intended stay; the minimum coverage is EUR 30,000.

Onward or return ticket

Not officially stated

No official source we could read makes a return or onward ticket a condition of entry in itself. Under the Schengen Borders Code (Annex I), the supporting documents border guards may check for tourist or private trips include a return or round-trip ticket.

Proof of funds

Required

The European Commission's table of reference amounts lists, as the minimum amount per day and per person for Liechtenstein, around CHF 100, and around CHF 30 for students with a valid student ID.

Arrival cards & declarations

Required
  • EES — Entry/Exit System (biometric registration) — The EU's Travel Europe site says that the first time you arrive at a border crossing point since the EES started, passport control officers will take a photo of your face and/or scan your fingerprints, and your passport will not be stamped. Canada's travel advice says Liechtenstein has no international airport; the closest is in Zurich. The UK government says there is no cost for EES registration. • ETIAS — European Travel Information and Authorization System — The EU's ETIAS site says an ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of the 30 European countries concerned, but that ETIAS is currently not in operation, no applications are collected, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. Staying past your permitted stay

Staying unlawfully, in particular after the permit-free or permitted stay has expired, is punished by the Landgericht (court) with up to one year's imprisonment or a monetary penalty of up to 360 daily rates. Committing it negligently is punished by a monetary penalty of up to 360 daily rates. Prosecution may be waived if the person is removed at once. The permit-free stay may not exceed three months within six months from the first entry, or the shorter stay set in the visa. A removal order sets a departure period of seven to thirty days. A removed foreigner who was given no departure period, or did not leave within it, receives an entry ban of at most five years.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation.

Anyone who accommodates people for payment must register them in the reporting procedure, or have them registered. The reports go to the Office of Economic Affairs and the National Police. The host must enter the guest's details in the electronic reporting system immediately after the guest arrives. The ordinance also requires the host to make sure that the completed and signed reporting form reaches the National Police on the guest's day of arrival. Intentionally breaching the reporting duty is fined up to CHF 5,000.

If not done: A host who intentionally breaches the reporting duty is fined up to CHF 5,000 by the Government.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Kurtaxe (visitor's tax) — Per night and person: hotels, inns, guesthouses and education centres CHF 3.50; holiday homes, flats and rooms CHF 2.50; youth hostels, dormitories, and tents, caravans and motorhomes on campsites CHF 1.50. Paid at the accommodation.

Anyone who accommodates people for payment must collect a Kurtaxe from them for every night and pay it over periodically. By law it may not exceed 4 francs per night. All guests are liable except children under 15 and people staying in Liechtenstein Alpine Club huts. The rate per person per night is CHF 3.50 in hotels, inns, guesthouses and education centres, CHF 2.50 in holiday homes, flats and rooms, and CHF 1.50 in youth hostels, dormitories and on campsites.

Exemptions: Children under 15; people staying overnight in the huts of the Liechtenstein Alpine Club.

Customs & currency

The UK government says Switzerland handles customs matters for Liechtenstein. Switzerland's Federal Office for Customs and Border Security says unrestricted amounts of cash may be carried into, through and out of Switzerland and need not be declared, but that if questioned during a check you must report truthfully, and anyone carrying CHF 10,000 or more will be asked to disclose their identity, the source and intended use of the cash and the beneficial owner.

  • The UK government says Switzerland handles customs matters for Liechtenstein, that there is an open border between the two countries, and refers travellers to its advice on customs rules for Switzerland.
  • Canada's travel advice says random border checks can be done, and customs officials may ask to see a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

International Driving Permit

Liechtenstein is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Liechtenstein's Traffic Admission Ordinance (VZV, Art. 39) says drivers from abroad may drive on a valid national driving licence, or on a valid international driving permit shown together with the national licence; either covers only the categories documented on it explicitly, understandably and in Latin script. Canada's travel advice says some car rental agencies may require an International Driving Permit; the UK government says UK licence holders do not need an international driving permit (IDP).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Liechtenstein?

The UK government says Liechtenstein follows Schengen area rules, and EU nationals have the right to travel freely there. Under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 (consolidated to 30 December 2025), nationals of the countries in its Annex II are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period; the UK tells British nationals they can travel to the Schengen area, which includes Liechtenstein, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Nationals of the countries in Annex I must hold a visa.

Does Liechtenstein issue its own visas?

Liechtenstein's Immigration and Passport Office says visa-required people can apply at the Swiss representation where they live abroad, and that the decision lies partly with the Swiss authorities and partly with the Office. It lists places where the Swiss representation is not responsible for issuing visas for Liechtenstein, for example Tirana and Kuala Lumpur (Austria) and Chicago (Lithuania).

Does time in Liechtenstein count toward my 90 Schengen days?

The UK government says British nationals can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Liechtenstein, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and that if you are travelling to other Schengen countries as well, your whole visit must be within the 90-day visa-free limit.

What currency does Liechtenstein use?

The Swiss franc (CHF), according to Canada's travel advice.
