Moldova visa and entry requirements

Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the nationalities exempted from a visa — among them the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Germany and France — and its Border Police says foreigners may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Foreign citizens can apply online, through the government portal evisa.gov.md, for short-stay (type C) visas only.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

Moldova's Border Police says that on the day you enter, your travel document must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date set for leaving Moldova, must have at least two blank pages and, except for identity cards, must have been issued within the last 10 years.

At least 2 blank pages required. Compare every country

Vaccinations

Not officially stated

No official source we read lists a vaccination certificate required for entry.

Travel insurance

Required

For tourism (C/T), visit (C/V), transport (C/TS), sport (C/S) and cultural, scientific, humanitarian and short medical-treatment (C/AD) visas, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for travel medical insurance valid throughout Moldova for the whole expected stay, covering medical repatriation, emergency treatment and hospitalisation or death, of not less than €30,000. The eVisa portal lists medical insurance for the stay among the documents an eVisa holder must have at the border.

Onward or return ticket

Required

Moldova's Border Police lists a return or round-trip ticket among the documents that justify a tourist or personal trip, together with proof of accommodation, and the entry conditions require proof of adequate means for the stay and for the return or transit. The UK FCDO says British visitors must be able to show a return or onward flight ticket.

Proof of funds

Required

Moldova's Border Police says foreigners must present documents justifying the purpose of entry, such as a hotel booking or a host's invitation for tourist or personal trips, and proof of adequate means both for the stay and for the return home or transit. For short-stay visa applications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for a bank statement showing at least 30 euro per day of stay, and not less than 300 euro for a stay shorter than 10 days, or a host's commitment of maintenance and accommodation.

Staying past your permitted stay

The UK government says the Moldovan authorities register your arrival date automatically and strictly enforce penalties, including fines and expulsion, against foreign visitors who stay longer than allowed. No Moldovan official page we could read states the amount.

Customs & currency

Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says amounts over €10,000 (or the equivalent) per person per trip must be declared in writing to customs; for taking out larger sums it lists documents to present, such as proof the money was brought in, a licensed bank's permission or a National Bank of Moldova authorisation.

  • The UK FCDO says you must get permission from the Moldovan Department of Monuments to take any artwork or antiques out of the country; otherwise customs can seize them and you could face criminal charges.

Cards & payments
The Government of Canada says credit cards are increasingly being accepted but the economy is primarily cash-based, and that only a few ATMs in Chișinău accept foreign bank cards. The UK FCDO says US dollars and euros are the most widely accepted foreign currencies, that notes should be in perfect condition, and that ATMs in Transnistrian banks do not accept cards from non-Transnistrian banks; Transnistria uses the Transnistrian ruble.
Safety — Exercise caution
The UK Foreign Office tells travellers to be alert to street crime and petty theft, particularly in Chișinău, and advises against all travel to Transnistria, which is outside the control of the Moldovan government.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

Holders of a "tax exempt" international road transport permit and diplomatic missions, consular offices and their staff do not pay it.

Tips & warnings

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria, which is outside the control of the Moldovan government. At the de facto checkpoints passports are controlled but not stamped, and you fill in 2 copies of a migration card and keep one to show when you leave. All border crossings between Ukraine and Transnistria are temporarily closed.

If you enter Moldova overland from Ukraine, the UK FCDO says to go to an internationally recognised border crossing point, in the north or south of Moldova, excluding the Transnistria region, and to check for updates on border crossings with the Moldovan Border Police.

The Government of Canada says credit cards are increasingly being accepted but the economy is primarily cash-based, and that only a few ATMs in Chisinau accept foreign bank cards; the UK FCDO says paying by card is now generally widespread, though not always possible, particularly outside Chisinau. The UK FCDO also says Transnistria uses the Transnistrian ruble, that the self-declared authorities consider paying there in other currencies illegal, and that ATMs in Transnistrian banks do not accept cards from non-Transnistrian banks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Moldova?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' list of nationalities exempted from a visa names, among others, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, France, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia, and the Border Police says foreigners may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Foreign citizens can apply online at evisa.gov.md for short-stay (type C) visas only.

How do I get a Moldova eVisa?

Apply online at the government portal evisa.gov.md, which takes only short-stay (type C) visa applications; type A, B and D visas are applied for at a Moldovan diplomatic mission or consular office. The eVisa costs €40, paid by international bank card once the application is complete, and the portal says examination takes up to 10 calendar days, extendable to 20 if necessary. At the border you need the printed eVisa, your travel document, a copy of the invitation where applicable and the documents justifying the purpose of the trip, and medical insurance for the stay.

Can I visit Transnistria?

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria, which it says is outside the control of the Moldovan government. It says the de facto authorities may ask the purpose and length of your visit and where you will stay, and may deny you entry; when you enter you fill in 2 copies of a migration card and keep one to show when you leave.

How long can I stay in Moldova without a visa?

The Border Police says foreigners may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counting the 180 days before each day of stay. The UK FCDO says you need a work or residence permit to work or for stays of more than 90 days.

Is Moldova in the EU or the Schengen Area?

The European Commission says the Schengen area is composed of 29 countries: 25 EU member states and 4 non-EU countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein).
