Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Montenegro?

It depends on your passport: citizens of the countries and territories listed in Article 1 of the Decree on Visa Regime, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Japan, can stay up to 90 days visa-free, and Peruvians 30 days. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia can stay 30 days, an exemption the decree sets only until 31 October 2026. Nationalities that do need a visa can apply in person at a Montenegrin diplomatic or consular mission, or enter on a valid Schengen, US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or Japanese visa or a residence permit from those countries or the Schengen area for up to 30 days.

Can I enter Montenegro with a Schengen visa?

Yes — under Article 7 of the Decree on Visa Regime, holders of a valid Schengen visa or a Schengen-area residence permit (and equally of US, UK, Irish, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or Japanese visas and residence permits) may enter and stay up to 30 days without a Montenegrin visa, and no longer than until the visa or permit expires if it is valid for less than 30 days.

How long can US citizens stay in Montenegro?

US passport holders can stay up to 90 days without a visa, under Montenegro's Decree on Visa Regime.

Does Montenegro use the euro?

Yes. The European Central Bank says Montenegro uses the euro, but without a formal arrangement.

Do Russian citizens need a visa for Montenegro?

Not until 31 October 2026: Montenegro's Decree on Visa Regime lets Russian citizens enter visa-free for up to 30 days, and sets that exemption only until that date.

Can EU citizens enter Montenegro with just an ID card?

Yes — Montenegro's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says EU citizens can stay up to 30 days with a valid ID card and up to 90 days with a valid passport, and that citizens of the signatory states of the Agreement on Freedom of Movement in the Western Balkans can enter and stay for up to 90 days with a valid personal document.
