Poland visa and entry requirements

The EU lists Poland among the Schengen area countries. EU law says Member States let Union citizens enter with a valid identity card or passport and may impose no entry visa on them; the EEA Agreement extends this to nationals of the EFTA States. Nationals of the countries listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries listed in Annex I must hold a visa; ETIAS is currently not in operation. The Visa Code sets the visa fee at €90.

How long you can stay

90 days in any rolling 180-day period

90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The Schengen Borders Code counts the day you arrive as the first day of stay and the day you leave as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: the Schengen Borders Code counts the 180-day period preceding each day of stay, so days already spent anywhere in the area during that period still count against the 90.

Staying past your permitted stay

A return decision is issued to a foreigner who stays in Poland without a required valid visa or other document, or who has not left Poland after using up the permitted visa-free stay in the Schengen area, or the stay allowed by a Schengen visa, in any 180-day period, or the stay allowed by a national visa. The return decision imposes a ban on re-entering Poland and the other Schengen states; in these cases the ban is from 6 months to 3 years. Anyone staying in Poland without a legal basis is liable to a fine.

Customs & currency

If you enter or leave the EU with €10,000 in cash (or its equivalent in other currencies), you must declare it to the customs authorities in the EU country you are entering or leaving, using the EU cash declaration form.

  • Entering the EU from a non-EU country, the EU's Your Europe portal lists duty-free allowances of 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer, plus 1 litre of spirits over 22% vol. or 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine, and other goods up to €300 per traveller or €430 for travellers by air and sea. For tobacco it lists Poland among the countries that apply the lower limit to land and sea travellers: 40 cigarettes or 20 cigarillos or 10 cigars or 50 g tobacco (the higher limit is 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 g tobacco).
  • Travelling between EU countries, the EU's Your Europe portal says no further payments are due on alcohol and tobacco bought for your own use and not for resale, as taxes are included in the price in the country where you bought them. Each EU country can set guideline values, which may not be lower than, for example, 800 cigarettes or 10 litres of spirits.
  • The UK government says certain checkpoints on the Poland-Belarus border are closed and that access to parts of the Polish border with Belarus is restricted, and that access to within 15m of the Poland-Ukraine border is restricted except at designated crossing points. Canada says Polish authorities have shut down certain border crossings with Belarus and Russia (Kaliningrad).

Safety — Generally safe
The UK government says most visitors do not experience any difficulties and serious crime against foreigners is rare, but crimes do occur and in some cases attacks have been racially motivated. It says criminals view foreigners as easy targets for street crime and petty theft, especially in crowded areas, in tourist spots, at main rail stations and on trains, and that passengers have been attacked, including sexual assaults, in unofficial taxis and cars booked using ride share apps.Verified Oct 6, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab)

International Driving Permit

Poland is a party to the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Poland's Act on Vehicle Drivers lists, among documents issued abroad that prove the right to drive, an international driving permit as defined in the 1949 Geneva Convention and a national or international driving licence as defined in the 1968 Vienna Convention, and says such a licence entitles its holder to drive in Poland for 6 months from the day their permanent or temporary stay begins. It says a valid licence issued by a European Union member state, Switzerland or an EFTA state party to the European Economic Area Agreement entitles its holder to drive for the licence's period of validity, and that a national licence defined in an international agreement to which Poland is a party entitles its holder to drive within the scope set by that licence and agreement.

Tips & warnings

The UK government tells British travellers that the Schengen area includes Poland and that, if they travel to other Schengen countries as well, the whole visit must be within the 90-day limit, with visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before travel counting towards the 90 days.

The UK government's travel advice says unofficial taxi drivers often overcharge and that passengers have been attacked, including sexual assaults, in unofficial taxis and cars booked using ride share apps; official taxis have the name and telephone number of the taxi company on the door and top of the taxi. Canada's advice adds that officially marked taxis display the rate per kilometre on the back passenger window and are required to have an operating meter.

The EU's Travel to Europe site says that the first time you arrive at a border crossing point since the EES started, passport control officers will take a photo of your face and/or scan your fingerprints, and that this can be quicker if you register some of your data in advance using a self-service system or a mobile application, where available.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Poland?

No visa is needed for a short stay: the United States is among the countries whose nationals Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 exempts from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. ETIAS, which will require visa-exempt travellers to have a travel authorisation, is currently not in operation; its website lists a EUR 20 application fee.

How much does a Poland Schengen visa cost?

The Visa Code sets the visa fee at €90, and €45 for children from the age of six and below the age of 12; the fee is waived for children under six. It says applications are decided within 15 calendar days, a period that may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases. Poland's Foreign Ministry says the uniform Schengen visa permits a stay in all Schengen countries of a maximum of 90 days during a 180-day period.

Can Ukrainian citizens enter Poland without a visa?

Yes, with a biometric passport: Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 exempts Ukrainian nationals from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, limited to holders of biometric passports issued by Ukraine in line with ICAO standards.

Does Poland use the euro?

Canada's travel advice says the currency of Poland is the zloty (PLN).

How long can I stay in Poland without a visa?

Nationals of the countries listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The UK government tells British travellers visiting other Schengen countries as well to keep the whole visit within the 90-day limit, counting visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before they travel.
