Slovenia visa and entry requirements

Slovenia's government says EU citizens need no visa or residence permit to enter and may do so with a valid identity card or passport. Nationals of the countries listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period — the UK government says British travellers can visit the Schengen area, which includes Slovenia, on those terms — and nationals of the countries listed in Annex I must hold a visa.

How long you can stay

90 days in any rolling 180-day period

90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen Area rather than per country. The day you arrive counts as the first day and the day you leave counts as the last. Leaving and coming back does not reset the allowance: on any given day, days already spent anywhere in the area during the preceding 180 still count against the 90.

Entry requirements

Passport validity

The UK Foreign Office says your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive and an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Slovenia's government says EU citizens can enter with a valid identity card or a valid passport.

Vaccinations

Not officially stated

Required

Staying past your permitted stay

Fine: 800 to 1,200 EUR

A foreigner whose permitted stay under the law, the Schengen Convention or an international treaty has expired commits a misdemeanour and is fined 800 to 1,200 euros. The police issue a return decision to a foreigner staying illegally, except in certain cases. The return decision sets an entry ban to Slovenia and the EU and Schengen area: one year where a voluntary-departure period was set, not enforced if the foreigner leaves within that period, and five years where the stay is a danger to public order, public security or national security.

Registering your presence after arrival

Required

Done by the accommodation.

A foreigner without a Slovenian residence permit who stays in accommodation must be registered by the accommodation provider (stanodajalec) with the police station of the area within three days of crossing the state border or of changing accommodation.

Customs & currency

If you enter or leave the EU with €10,000 in cash (or its equivalent in other currencies), you must declare it to the customs authorities in the EU country you are entering or leaving. Canada's travel advice says this does not apply if you are travelling within the European Union.

  • The UK government's travel advice says you cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries, with exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed needed for medical reasons.

International Driving Permit

Slovenia is a party to both the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). Article 66 of Slovenia's Drivers Act (ZVoz-1), as published in the Official Gazette No. 85/2016, says that a person whose valid driving licence issued abroad is not in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic must also carry a valid international driving permit while driving, and that a foreigner with a registered residence in Slovenia based on a residence permit may drive on a valid foreign licence, subject to reciprocity, for one year from registering that residence. The UK government tells British drivers they can drive in Slovenia on their UK driving licence, and says the blood alcohol limit for experienced drivers is 0.05%. Canada's travel advice tells Canadians they must carry an international driving permit, and says there is zero tolerance for drinking and driving. No Slovenian official source we could read states for how long a visitor may use a foreign licence.

Motorway vignette — electronic, tied to the number plate

Mandatory · motorways and expressways. Vehicles up to 3.5 t. Toll class 2A covers most cars (up to 1.3 m high above the front axle); taller vans and campers pay class 2B, which is twice the price.

  • Weekly (class 2A)€16.00
  • Monthly (class 2A)€32.00
  • Annual (class 2A)€117.50

DARS says the e-vignette gives the right to use all motorways and expressways in Slovenia, is linked to the vehicle registration plate number, and that vehicles without a valid e-vignette may not enter a toll road. The Karavanke tunnel to Austria is excluded from the e-vignette: the toll for vehicles up to 3,500 kg is 9 EUR, paid at the Hrušica toll booth. DARS says that from 1 January 2026 an e-vignette is no longer needed for the coastal expressway (the H5 and H6 sections).

Tips & warnings

The UK government says that to drive on Slovenian motorways you must buy an e-vignette; weekly, monthly or yearly e-vignettes are sold at petrol stations, post offices and DARS offices, and you can also buy them from DARS online — only use the official DARS website to buy them online.

The UK government's advice for hiking in Slovenia includes planning for the weakest member of your group, using a map with marked paths, checking whether mountain cabins are open and not using closed trails; it says bears are present in wooded areas throughout Slovenia. For mountain rescue, call 112.

The EU says ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of 30 European countries; it is currently not in operation, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Slovenia?

Slovenia's government says EU citizens need no visa and may enter with a valid identity card or passport. Nationals of the countries listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 are exempt from the visa requirement for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and nationals of the countries listed in Annex I must hold a visa when crossing the external borders. The UK government says British travellers can visit the Schengen area, which includes Slovenia, visa-free on those terms.

Is Slovenia in the Schengen Area?

Yes. The EU lists Slovenia among the Schengen area countries. The UK government tells people travelling on a full British citizen passport that visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before they travel count towards the 90-day visa-free limit. Canada's travel advice says member states may temporarily reintroduce controls at internal borders, so you may have to pass through immigration controls when entering Slovenia even from another Schengen country.

Will I need ETIAS for Slovenia?

ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are being collected; the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. The EU says applying costs EUR 20, though some travellers are exempt from the fee, and that an authorisation is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of 30 European countries.

What currency does Slovenia use?

Canada's travel advice says the currency of Slovenia is the euro, that ATMs are rare in mountain regions or small villages, and to carry sufficient cash. No official source we could read describes how widely cards are accepted.

Can I day-trip from Slovenia to Croatia or Italy?

The EU's Your Europe portal lists Italy, Croatia and Slovenia all in the Schengen area, and says you must show a valid passport or ID card when a country applies temporary border controls. The UK government says visits to other Schengen countries count towards the same 90-day visa-free limit.
