United Arab Emirates visa and entry requirements

Dubai’s tourism department says citizens of more than 80 countries are able to get a visa on arrival in Dubai; it describes a multiple-entry visa upon arrival valid for 6 months from the date of entry for a stay of 90 days total, and a visa on arrival valid for 30 days from the date of entry. The EU–UAE short-stay visa waiver agreement provides for visa-free travel for citizens of the Union for a maximum period of 90 days in any 180-day period. The UAE government portal says a tourist visa is for those who are not eligible for visa on arrival or visa-free entry, and that you can apply for one through airlines, hotels and travel agents.

Best time to visit

The UAE government describes a desert climate: warm and sunny in winter, hot and humid in summer, and generally cooler in the eastern mountains. The Government of Canada says humidity and heat may be most severe in the hot season from June to September, and that sandstorms and dust storms may occur any time, particularly during the summer months.

Tips & warnings

The Government of Canada says certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, such as codeine and psychiatric medications, are controlled substances in the UAE and illegal to bring in, even in small quantities, without prior permission from the UAE Ministry of Health, and that bringing banned medication without prior approval and required documentation may lead to confiscation, heavy fines and jail sentences. The UK government tells British nationals that they must get approval in advance from the UAE Ministry of Health to bring medication, and to apply online.

During Ramadan, the Government of Canada advises refraining from drinking, eating and smoking in public between sunrise and sunset. It says that in Abu Dhabi and Dubai during Ramadan, restaurants remain open, serving food as normal, and most government and public sector businesses have reduced working hours.

The Government of Canada says it’s legal to consume alcohol in private homes and licensed venues, but a punishable offence to drink or be under the influence of alcohol in public; the UK government says drinking or possessing alcohol is illegal in the Emirate of Sharjah. Canada adds that the legal blood alcohol limit for driving is zero, that verbal insults and obscene gestures may be considered criminal acts, and that laws related to online behaviour, which also apply to the use of social media, are strict.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for the UAE?

No. The UAE Embassy in Washington says US citizens are not required to apply for a visa before traveling: a visa is issued upon entry, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days, non-renewable, whether continuously or intermittently, within 180 days calculated from the date of first entry. It adds that a fine of AED 50 is imposed for each day over the 90 days.

How long can EU citizens stay in the UAE?

The EU–UAE short-stay visa waiver agreement provides for visa-free travel for citizens of the Union for a maximum period of 90 days in any 180-day period. It defines a citizen of the Union as a national of a Member State, and ‘Member State’ as any Member State of the Union with the exception of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Can Indian citizens get a UAE visa on arrival?

ICP issues a 14-day entry visa to Indian ordinary passport holders and their family members who hold a valid visa, residence permit or US Green Card issued by the US, EU or UK, or a valid residence permit issued by Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand (issuance fee AED 100 plus smart services fee AED 100; it can be extended only once and for the same duration). The UAE Embassy in Washington says Indian citizens with U.S. visas, green cards, UK residence permits or EU residence permits can obtain an entry visa upon arrival, valid for 14 days, for a fee of AED 100. Dubai’s tourism department says that Indian citizens without one of the documents it lists will need to apply for a visa through airlines, hotels or travel partners, or other organisations based in the UAE.

How much does a UAE tourist visa cost?

GDRFA Dubai lists AED 200 for a 30-day and AED 300 for a 60-day single-entry tourist visa, in addition to value added tax (5%), and says the total amount may vary. ICP lists, for visas issued through tourism establishments, an application fee of AED 100, an issuance fee of AED 100 per month for a single entry or AED 200 per month for multiple entry, and a smart-service fee of AED 100.

Do I need a visa to transit through Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

GDRFA Dubai issues a 48/96-hour transit visa that allows a foreign national transiting through the country’s airports to enter the country as a visitor. It says applications should be submitted through approved airlines, lists the service channels as the websites of the intermediary (Emirates Airlines, Flydubai, Dnata, airport hotel, etc.), and gives the fee as AED 50 plus fees for the intermediary’s service. The UAE Embassy in Washington says the 96-hour transit visa is issued by the airlines and to make sure to receive a copy of the visa before traveling.
