Tanzania visa and entry requirements

Tanzania Immigration's visa guidelines say a visa can be obtained online through its official website, which they recommend, or on arrival at an official entry point; the ordinary visa costs 50 USD, and US passport holders must apply for the multiple visa, which costs 100 USD. They say nationals of EAC member states, of SADC member countries except Comoro and of Commonwealth countries except the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand are not required to apply for a visa. The UK Foreign Office says all visitors to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, except residents, must have mandatory inbound travel insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Tanzania Immigration's visa guidelines say nationals of EAC member states, of SADC member countries except Comoro and of Commonwealth countries except the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand are not required to apply for a visa. Other visitors coming for tourism must apply for the ordinary visa (50 USD), online or on arrival at an official entry point, except US passport holders, who must apply for the multiple visa (100 USD).

Does the Tanzanian visa cover Zanzibar?

Yes. Tanzania's visa guidelines say a visitor to both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar selects the first destination on the form and is allowed to visit both places without a new visa. The UK Foreign Office says all visitors except residents must have mandatory inbound travel insurance and only need to buy it for their first port of entry: from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation if they arrive in Zanzibar first, or from the National Insurance Corporation if they arrive on the mainland first. The Zanzibar Insurance Corporation says its policy costs US $44 per visitor.

Can I get a Tanzanian visa on arrival?

Tanzania's visa guidelines list the countries whose nationals are eligible for both the online and the on-arrival visa. Nationals of the countries on their no-visa-on-arrival list (among them Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia and Syria) cannot obtain a visa on arrival unless they have special permission from the Commissioner General of Immigration, and stateless persons and refugees must obtain a visa in advance. The guidelines recommend the online application.

Why do US citizens pay more for a Tanzanian visa?

Tanzania's visa guidelines say that, due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and America, American nationals are not entitled to the ordinary visa, so US passport holders who wish to visit for tourism or holiday must apply for the multiple visa (100 USD) even if they plan a single entry. It may be issued for a maximum validity of twelve months.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Tanzania?

WHO lists Tanzania as requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination from travellers aged 1 year or over arriving from countries at risk of yellow fever transmission, including travellers who transited more than 12 hours through the airport of such a country.

Is the East Africa Tourist Visa valid for Tanzania?

No. Uganda's Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control says the East African Tourist Visa allows the traveller to travel to Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only.
