Turkey visa and entry requirements

Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists, nationality by nationality, who is exempt from a visa and who can obtain an e-Visa online at www.evisa.gov.tr; it says US ordinary passport holders are exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and that ordinary passport holders of some visa-required nationalities with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit can get a one-month single-entry e-Visa, in some cases provided that they meet certain conditions.

How long you can stay

90 days in any rolling 180-day period

Türkiye counts the allowance across a rolling 180-day window: the MFA states the exemption as “90 days in any 180-day period” for nationality after nationality. Leaving and coming back does not start a fresh 90 days — days spent in the previous 180 still count against you. The MFA does not say whether the day you arrive and the day you leave are themselves counted, so we count both.

Passport validity

Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that, under article 7.1b of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, foreigners should carry a passport with an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the "duration of stay" of their visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit. It also advises having a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

Not officially stated

No official source we could read states an onward- or return-ticket requirement for visitors to Türkiye.

Staying past your permitted stay

The Presidency of Migration Management says a foreigner who overstays a visa or visa exemption owes administrative fines under Fees Law No. 492; the pages we read do not state the amount. A foreigner who overstayed less than 3 months, comes to the border to leave before being detected and pays the fines receives no entry ban. One who overstayed 3 months or more and does the same is barred for 1 month (3 to 6 months' overstay), 3 months (6 months to 1 year), 1 year (1 to 2 years), 2 years (2 to 3 years) or 5 years (more than 3 years). In the other cases the page lists, including deportation, the ban is 3 months (overstay up to 3 months), 6 months (3 to 6 months), 1 year (6 months to 1 year), 2 years (1 to 2 years) or 5 years (more than 2 years). Unpaid fines block entry even after a ban has ended. A deportation decision is taken against anyone who exceeds a visa or visa exemption by more than ten days; a foreigner who overstayed less than 10 days may leave without one if they pay the fine.

Other compulsory government charges

  • Accommodation tax (konaklama vergisi) — 1% of the price of accommodation services, from 1 May to 31 December 2026 (2% under the law outside that period). Paid at the accommodation.

The Revenue Administration says that under Presidential Decision 11263, the accommodation tax applies at 1% instead of 2% to accommodation services provided from 1 May to 31 December 2026. The tax is shown separately on the invoice issued by the accommodation.

Customs & currency

Türkiye's Ministry of Trade says travellers taking more than TRY 25,000, or more than EUR 10,000 or the equivalent in foreign currency, out of the country must declare it to a customs officer; smaller amounts need not be declared, and failing to declare brings an administrative fine. The UK government's travel advice says there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency or Turkish lira you can take into Turkey.

  • The UK FCDO says buying or exporting antiquities is illegal and can bring a fine and a prison sentence of 5 to 12 years. Some historical items found at local markets and in antique shops can be sold within Türkiye but are illegal to export, so confirm an item's status before you buy.

The UK advises against all travel to within 10 km of the border with Syria. It also advises avoiding all demonstrations, says street robbery and pickpocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul, advises finding a registered, metered taxi (app-based and pre-booked taxis are also widely available), and warns to be wary of strangers who approach you to change money or to take you to a restaurant or nightclub.Verified Oct 3, 2026 · Source: gov.uk (opens in a new tab) · archived copy Aug 13, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Türkiye is a party to both the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection). The UK government's travel advice says you need a 1968 International Driving Permit or a UK driving licence notarised in Turkish to drive in Turkey, and that the 1949 IDP is not accepted any more.

Tips & warnings

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs names www.evisa.gov.tr as the website for obtaining e-Visas.

The UK FCDO says buying or exporting antiquities is illegal and can bring a fine and a prison sentence of 5 to 12 years, and that some historical items sold within Türkiye are illegal to export. Confirm an item's status before you buy it.

Canada's travel advice warns that credit card, debit card and ATM fraud occurs, and advises using ATMs inside establishments such as banks and shopping centres instead of those on the street.

The UK FCDO says it is illegal to insult the Turkish nation or the national flag, and a criminal offence to insult the President or Atatürk; these laws can apply to comments or images online no matter where you were or when you posted them. It also says not to take photographs of or near military or official installations, and that it is illegal not to carry photographic ID: always carry your passport or residence permit.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Turkey?

No. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says US ordinary passport holders are exempted from visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; official passport holders are required to have a visa.

How much does the Turkish eVisa cost?

No official source we could read states the current e-Visa fee; the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says fees for e-Visas obtained via www.evisa.gov.tr are lower than for visas obtained on arrival at Turkish airports, and refers to its website for fee information. It describes the e-Visa nationality by nationality: for some it is a one-month single-entry e-Visa, for others a three-month multiple-entry e-Visa.

How long can EU citizens stay in Turkey without a visa?

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists each EU country separately; for the Republic of Cyprus, which it lists as the "Greek Cypriot Administration", it says "Ordinary and official passport holders are required to have visa to enter Türkiye". It also says the length of stay provided by a visa or visa exemption cannot exceed 90 days within each 180 days, and that foreigners who wish to stay longer than 90 days should apply for a short-term residence permit at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration.

How long must my passport be valid to enter Turkey?

Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says foreigners should carry a passport with an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of their visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit, and advises having a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

What is Turkey's conditional eVisa?

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says ordinary passport holders of certain visa-required nationalities, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and Egyptian nationals aged 15 to 45, can get a single-entry e-Visa at www.evisa.gov.tr if they hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, for some nationalities provided that they meet certain conditions; for Egyptians aged 15 to 45 the conditions include travelling with Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, Egypt Air or Air Cairo.
